Bachison was crowned Miss Utah State Fair Thursday night. Bachison sang "Natural Woman" for her talent and her service platform is "Fitness for the Future: Preventing Childhood Obesity." Bachison will compete in the Miss Utah Pageant next June. She has competed in the Miss Utah Pageant in the past and last year placed in the top 10. Bachison is working toward a bachelor's of integrated studies degree in history, political science and communication. After graduation, she wants to pursue a career in broadcast journalism covering the political beat. In conjunction with the Nov. 2 election, and in the hopes of getting more students civically engaged, an elections kickoff party will be held Friday, featuring an election countdown, local bands, free food, prizes and voter registration. The kickoff party, to be held near the Stewart Bell Tower, is sponsored by various groups on campus including Youth '04, the Volunteer Involvement Program, the political science honors society, the American Democracy Project and WSUSA. Youth "04 is a nationally affiliated group on campus designed to get students involved civically, run by Weber Stare University senior Mike Frost. "This is our big event to start with this semester," Frost said. "To get everybody on campus registered is the big idea." Voter registration tables will be set out near the Stewart Bell Tower all day Friday. "Anybody who has moved since the last election does need to register/1 Frost said. "And anybody who's turned 18 needs to register. So that covers quite a bit of Weber State." A bus, sponsored by a statewide student organization titled Students Serving Utah Network, will be stopping during the kickoff party between 6 and 6:30 p.m. "{SSUN's) mission is to promote civic awareness and service," said WSUSA External Relations Director and WSU senior Jeremy Barnum.
