Show Wednesday, July 25,2007 Page 4 Arts & Entertainment The Signpost Cooper's Triple Scoop Nationally ranked drum corps will compete at Blue Knights to host Encore By Shirrel Cooper a&e editor | The Signpost "Can movies still leave me warm and fuzzy without being highly unplausable?" There's something about movies that makes me love them. Maybe it's the fact that the girl always gets the guy, or maybe it's because the good guy always wins. I love the fact that movies can take you places that you've never been and hold your attention for over 90 minutes. And after drawing you in, I love the fact that most movies never fail to end happily ever after. But how true to life is this? Granted, we want to be entertained and leave with a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. But how far is too far? I stumbled upon a cliche-movie website and had to laugh at the truthfulness of it. It made me wonder if movies can still leave me warm and fuzzy without being highly unplausable at the same time. I 'm going to show you some of the cliche"s found on filmcliches. com and you can decide if the movies would be the same if we went for more realistic. Movie Cliches 1. If you try to get your expartner back by going out with someone else in order to make your ex jealous, you will succeed, but by the time you have achieved what you set out to do you will have fallen for the other person. Tickets cost The Signpost Nine nationally ranked drum corps will compete at Weber State University for the Corps Encore, a semi-final competition on July 30. The corps has its origins in the military, said Thomas Root, who has been involved with the corps for almost 20 years. "It has taken on its own personality," Root said. "Like a football team, we meet head-to-head in a competition with one major winner." The other semi-final is in Boise, Idaho. Root said the competing corps, all from the United States, represent the top performers in the world. The winners and all the corps will then compete in Los Angeles. Then the winners of that competition will perform at the Rosebowl. "It's very much like a marching band, except a good corps will take apart a marching band/' said George Lindstrom, manager of the competition. "Seventytwo accomplished musicians playing brass has an impact you can't describe." Lindstrom said the competition is fierce, the work grueling and the players aggressive, with snare drums, tenor drums, bass drums and keyboard instruments, a color guard and a dance team. Root said there are 120 members of a drum corps. "We are not sedate," Lindstrom said. "Can you imagine 130 people inside in a concert? It would take the paint off the walls." The corps is not pampered. They have to be in the best shape possible. They between $10 to $25. The corps practice up to 12 hours a day throughout the summer and are in top performing ability. Corps is divided into the divisions one, two and three. The players competing at WSU are in division one, the top division. Lindstrom said judging a competition takes eight to nine judges because of the complexity of the competition. They judge 6. All right, so .1 admit that if things didn't end happily ever after I probably wouldn't keep coming back for more, and the cliche's make it so that happens. I guess cliches can be a good thing.
