Show Page 10 Friday, October 13, 2000 THE SIGNPOST By Kristin Bune news writer The Signpost This fall's influenza vaccine will be delayed a few weeks for Weber Stale University students because of problems assoc iated with its production. There is an industry-wide delay In the delivery of the 2000-2001 flu shot as the result of lower than normal production yield from one of the viral strains included in the vaccine. These low yields may result in a potential shortage of vaccine this season. "Weber State will be receiving shipments of the vaccine in October, November and December," Director of the Student Health Center, Julianna Larsen said. 'There have not been any specific dates given for delivery and only partial shipments will be made during those months." Timing for students to receive their flu shots will depend on when and how much vaccine the Student Health Center gets. Larsen recommends that high-risk individuals receive the vaccine first and as soon as possible when the first shipment arrives. Presidentia The Student Health Center wants students with any type of ongoing, chronic health conditions to come to the center and get their shots first. "As the vaccine becomes available." Larsen said, "we will try and get the information out to students. At that time, we will announce times and locations for getting the shots." Flu shots for WSU students are available at no charge. Student fee revenues cover the costs for the vaccine. Larsen said because students spend a great deal of time in classrooms that have recirculated air supplies, their potential for exposure to illness is increased. Students must remember that influenza is a serious disease. A virus that spreads from infected persons to the nose and throats of others causes the flu. The influenza season in the United States runs from November to March or April of each year. People of any age can get influenza. Most people are ill with the flu for only a few days, but some get much sicker and may need to be hospitalized. Influenza causes thousands of deaths each year, mostly among the elderly, Larsen said. The benefit of getting a flu shot continued from page 4 "I actually found it very refreshing and much more realistic that both Icandidates had many of the same views," Whitzell said. "Both did well on facts and very little issue disagreements." The most notable aspect of the debate was Gov. Bush's knowledge of foreign policy. "Here he exceeded all expectations," Noel said. The exchange heated up a little when Gore attacked Texas' environmental standards and said Texas' health care ranked 50th out of 50. Bush did not comment. Noel said Gore made his best points on Bush's health care and environmental records in Texas. 'They both had good points on many issues that I care about, such as the environment, foreign policy and education," Whitzell said. Candidates differ in opinion about the conceivable cause of tragedies like Columbine as well as the solutions to prevent future occurrences. Gore favors gun control through increased federal regulations that would prevent weapons from being in the hands of the wrong people. He sees the problem to be too many guns getting into the hands of children and criminals. Bush is not in favor of increasing existing gun control regulations, but would like to see rigid enforcement or current laws. He said, "It's the problem a culture that somewhere along the line began to disrespect life." "This debate may not have made the decision for who to vote for easier, but definitely made some good points and put the focus back on the policies and away from the bashing," Whitzell said. "It made many issues clearer for me." Lehrer made the point that Nov. 7 Bush or Gore would be elected the leader of the single most powerful nation in the world. Both candidates have considered their own abilities and strengths to successfully fulfill this awesome responsibility, have you?
