PRSSA is a student-run national organization sponsored by the Public Relation Society of America. The organization prepares students to become well-prepared public relation professionals through internships and job leads, association with public relation professionals, and scholarship opportunities. Public Relations students are excited about the opportunity to join this professional organization, viewing it as a new way to find out what a major in public relations has to offer. Rhoades plans on joining PRSSA because of an opportunity to network with PR professionals, search for internships, and become familiar with the PR world. Annual dues for the organization are $41. Included in the membership fee is a subscription to The Forum, the " PRSSA national newspaper, which is produced three times a year. Lunches and meetings are held monthly, providing an opportunity for students to network and learn from their parent members. Salt Lake Chapter members include, Mark Hadley, 1989 graduate from WSU, who currently acts as PRSSA liaison. Hadley has over 1 3 years experience in the PR field and is the media relations specialist for the Utah Division of Wildlife resources. WSU received permission to The Public Relations Student Society aims to foster the following: Understanding of current theories and procedures of the profession Appreciation of the highest ethical ideals and principles Awareness of an appropriate professional attitude Appreciation of Associate Membership in PRSA and eventually accredited membership The Public Relations Student Society of America has more than 7,000 members in 227 chapters-on college campuses across the country. 1 El SURFING DOWNLOADS INSTALLATION establish a chapter last July, after undergoing an extensive review of its PR concentration, curriculum and faculty. The Department of Communication at WSU joins an organization that boasts of over 7,000 members and 227 chapters nationwide. Members of PRSSA are encouraged to attend national conferences that are hosted twice a year and regional conferences that are generally held in the spring. These conferences provide networking opportunities, workshops, social events, resume critiquing, and more. PRSSA provides members an opportunity to join PRSSA as an associate member upon graduation, at a reduced membership fee. Becoming part of this professional organization will offer students the prospect of lifetime membership. A member of PRSSA is '2 -u ji ' t I j - t.L?R encouraged to become an accredited member. An accredited member has demonstrated their commitment to the highest standards of public relations practice. The program was established in 1964 by PRSSA. and approximately 6.000 members have received this accreditation. During Thursday"s meeting, Mike Cervan, president of the University of Utah chapter, and Dave Nadkarni, past president, presented an overview of the society and its academic and professional benefits. Dr. Andrew Lingwall is the faculty advisor for the organization. Election of student officers took place at the first meeting. Meetings will be at 3 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month, the next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 2. All interested students are invited to attend.
