WSU attempted many fade routes throughout the game trying to reach the end zone. Despite losing cornerbacks James McCowan and Julian Gooden to injury, the WSU secondary held the SUU receiving corps to only 15 receptions in 44 pass attempts. The T-birds managed only 211 yards of total offense. SUU's first-year coach Gary Andersen was frustrated with his team's offense after the game. "We were the craps on offense," he said. "We made no plays." The 'Cats saw it differently however. "I think we had a great game plan coming in," defensive captain Matt McFadden said. "Coach Jerry Graybeal put in some stuff that took some learning and some people to operate it and I think we did an excellent job." Graybeal also attributed the credit to his defense. "We've had that package and we've used it lots of times. My kids did a great job of executing it." "Give the kids credit," he continued. "They believed in what we were trying to get across to them." The game marked Kyle Bauer's first start since becoming a Wildcat. Bauer threw for 202 yards to give WSU a balanced attack on offense. He threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Justin DeFour on the first possession of the game to stake the 'Cats to a quick 7-0 lead. After a quick stop by the Wildcat defense, the offense again marched down the field before stalling on the two-yard line. Johnson nailed a 20-yard field goal to give WSU their only points until the final four minutes of the game. Both teams struggled with penalty problems early on. WSU and SUU combined for 61 yards in penalties in the first quarter alone and 17Lfor the game. It was the first time that WSU won a game in which it scored less than 20 points since the 2000 season. They defeated Northern Arizona University 12-10. DeFour also kept a personal streak alive with 108 yards of receiving. It was his fourth consecutive game with over 100 yards.
