Police Beat With Katie Coombs Signpost senior reporter Accident injures student A Weber State University student was injured in anauto-pedestrian accident on Jan. 12, making it the second such incident this quarter. Emil F. Harker, a senior majoring in family studies, was struck by a car at around one o'clock Friday afternoon, while crossing the intersection at 3850 Harrison Blvd. with a group of people. Officer Randy Hammack and Sergeant Kent Kiernan of the WSU police department were the first officers on the scene, and assisted in directing traffic until officers from the Ogden City Police department arrived. Kiernan said the student, who was walking inside the cross-walk area, was hit when a stopped car was pushed into the intersection from behind. "One car stopped and the other car rear-ended it, forcing the first car into the pedestrian," he said. He said none of the other pedestrians crossing at the time were hit by either of the two cars involved.Harker was taken to McKay Dee Hospital Center, where he was treated for bruises and minor abrasions. Ogden City police officials said the driver of the car that failed to stop for the pedestrians was at fault for the accident. Earlier this month, another WSU student, Emily La wson, was injured on ,campus in an auto-pedestrian accident on Dixon Drive. WSU police lieutenant Roger Johnsonsaid there are precautions that students need to take in order to insure their safety while crossing streets. "Go to the crosswalks," hesaid. "In the (accident) that we had here, the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk," he said. "(Harker) was in a crosswalk. At that point, he is in the right." Pedestrians should wear light-colored clothing when walking in the dark and use sidewalks whenever possible. Johnson also urged students to watch out for cars when crossing, even though pedestrians have the right-of-way. "Obey the laws,"he said. "And be aware of the vehicles around you."
