(cont'd from page 6) of advice that helped him emmencely. Bret Julander, who was helping Simpson with his role told him not to just slump over but to try to feel the pain of aging in every joint and then to move slowly because of that pain. Simpson said that he feels especially preasured to do well this year because his wife is played by an elderly woman. He said that his young age will be more easily noticed in comparison to her. Simpson said that he will be assisted in his aged look this year by Mark Carpenter, a freelance makeup artist and owner of Car Fects, a professional makeup service. Carpenter will use prosthetics and is sculturing a mask for Simpson's face every night of the performances. Every part of Simpson's face except his eyeballs will be covered. The prosthetic mask is a new addition to the production. Last year latex was used to stitch Simpson's face to create wrinkles. Excited for his newold face Simpson said that his makeup will take his two makeup artists two hours to ap ply his makeup for each of the performances.A great deal of the power the production has, said Simpson, is created by the Chorale. The 300 member Chorale will sing throughout the pageant. Simpson said that the Chorale-sets the mood for him on stage. 'They sing and cry right along with you," he said. Simpson said that the production is a success because of it's mix of comic and serious kinds of things. He believes that the message the pageant portrays makes it enjoyable and memorable for all who see it. Although the production has been a great deal of work for Simpson he said that it has been worth it. He said he enjoys elderly people and has learned just how much they understand and how much they could share if they had the chance. He said that his greatest compliment came last year after a performance, when he was approached by an elderly woman who was still crying from the play. She said "you really know how we feel." 'Little Mary Sunshine' premieres July 30 in the Allred Theatre by Richard Jordan Staff Reporter The last of the three Utah Musical Theater productions to premiere, "Little Mary Sunshine" begins tonight in the Val A. Browning Center for the performing Arts, Allred Theatre. The play will run alternately with the other two plays, "Annie" and "Anne of Green Gables" through August 17. "Little Mary Sunshine" is a parody of the Jeanette MacDonald-Nelson Eddy film operettas of the 1930's. This lighthearted musical is set in the Colorado Mountains and comes to life with Colorado Rangers, a strapping Captain, a native heroine, a chorus of school girls, music and dancing. In the play, Little Mary Sunshine, who was raised by the Indians is the owner of an Inn situated high in the Colorado mountains. Mary has spunk, nothing lets her down as she works to keep her financially troubled Inn from going bankrupt. Mary is played by Lisa A. Swanson of Boise Idaho. She said that this is the funniest play she has ever had the pleasure to act in. She said she is having a ball as Mary. Mary's sweetheart, Capt. "Big Jim" Warington, head of the forest rangers, represents the law in the Colorado mountains. The story comes to life when an Indian brave, Yellow Knife gets into trouble with the law. Capt. Warington has to leave Mary for his mission into the big woods to catch Yellow Knife. He is caught between his budding love for Mary and his duty to go on his mission. Capt. Warington is played by Jim Madden, a Utah Musical Theatre Core Company actor from St. Paul Minnesota. Madden is also playing Daddy Warbucks in the Utah Musical Theatre production of "Annie." He said he is enjoying his time at Weber State and is impressed with the facilities. The entire play takes place outside of Mary's Inn. The time space involved is less than one day. The time space relationship of light shanges in the Colorado mountains keeps a person thinking, said Jeff Crivello, lighting designer for the Browning Center. He said that lighting for the play is a real technical challenge; however, he has had a lot of fun doing it. Tickets for "Little Mary Sunshine" and the other two Utah Musical Theatre productions are available in the center lobby of the Browning Center, Z.C.M.I., at any other Datatix Outlet, or by calling the Browning Center at 626-6618. lit - f . f v " ' I r.-: . -, ' . i . x - . 1 . , .
