Show 6 Signpost-Tuesday, July 9, 1985 Spanking orphans will be difficult for Mrs. Hannigan in 'Annie' by Richard Jordan Staff Reporter In the upcoming Utah Musical Theatre production of "Annie," Mrs. Hannigan, a mean self centered woman who runs an orphanage for girls, is played by Pat Farr Hughes. In reality Hughes is a far cry from the character she plays. She said that the hardest part of performing as Mrs. Hannigan is giving the little orphan girls a paddle spanking. She said that she cringes when she even thinks of it. Hughes believes that spanking the girls might be easier if the girls were her own. Hughes has four children ranging from five to 11 years of age. A 1972 graduate of Weber State College, Hughes has a degree in Education with a minor in Theatre Arts. After she graduated, Hughes accompanied her husband to BYU, while he earned a degree in Law. Hughes said that she was fortunate to play a major role with the BYU Theatre Productions while she was in Provo. This experience along with other acting and teaching experience has kept Hughes close to the theatre. While persuing her interests in theatre Hughes has not let her degree in education rust on the wood shed wall. She is active in teaching young people theatrical skills. In 1980 Hughes founded the River-dale Community Theatre. Since then she and other theatre workers have taught theatre arts to many people, mainly children, in the area. They have also directed and produced many productions. Amoung the productions that the Riverdale Community Theatre has produced are "The Wizard of Ozz," "Peter Pan," and "The Musical Fan-tastics." Hughes said that the main purpose of the theatre is to teach children theatre and instill a love of the arts within them. Recently moving to Washington Terrace, Hughes is no longer working with the theatre group. She is returning to Weber to work on another degree, in Theatre Arts. Hughes said that painting is another love of hers, but she said that she is never too busy to play a good theatre part. She said she is enjoying her part as Mrs. Hannigan because Mrs. Hannigan has no redeeming qualities; she is purely selfish, and takes everything out on the orphan kids. Hughes added that she feels an added pressure because of the quality of the other actors. She said that the girls who are playing the part of Annie are especially sharp and she feels that she must work extra hard to keep up with them.
