Shupe Staff Reporter The Corrections and Law Enforcement Department of Social Sciences is now a vital part of the Utah law enforcement training, and department members are looking forward to an even brighter future. The department offers associate degrees in law enforcement, corrections, and security management. Also offered is a bachelor degree in corrections and minors in law enforcement and corrections. Weber State is the only college or university in Utah offering a degree in corrections and law enforcement. Therefore, the department plays a major role in education for the Utah Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). Most department instructors teach courses throughout the state, offering credit through the college or for in-service training offered by POST. The department also operates a basic academy for POST. Students of the department can become certified to work in the state before graduating by completing the basic training offered on campus. Local community members are also able to certify through the collge program. Interest in corrections and law enforcement continues to grow. According to Michael D. Norman, associate professor, the department has approximately 350 student majors on campus. With such a high number of majors, there is some talk of developing a master program. "Our department has received many requests and letters for a master program. A master program at Weber State would really fulfill a state need," said Norman.
