I., 1 ' LJ3-a- by JaNae Barlow Entertainment Editor The Fourth of July is a great holiday for fireworks and celebrating the Nation's birthday; but in Utah the party continues to celebrate the comming of the pioneers to the Salt Lake valley in 1847. Ogden celebrates this event with Ogden Pioneer Days beginning with the crowning of the new Miss Rodeo Utah on the 24th of July, Utah's birthday, to the Ogden Street Festival and Corps Encore, a National Drum and Bugle Competition held in WSC Wildcat Stadium. Ogden Pioneer Days officially began last week with the National Western Film Festival in Ogden's Union Station and Egyptian Theatre. At the festival 31 Westerns were screened, most of them were classics but a few were fairly new. The festival also featured film scholars from all over the United States. The celebration will begin again this week with the Ogden Area Square Dance Association Annual Street Dance, Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m. with 200 dancers expected to perform on Washington Blvd. Friday, July 19, activities begin at 9 a.m. with the Pioneer Days Children's Parade down Washington Blvd. This will also be the first day for the annual Downtown Ogden Sidewalk Sale. At 6:30 p.m. is a Pioneer Days pre-rodeo concert in the Ogden Stadium featuring Dorothy Doerr and the Peterson Brothers. Admission for the concert includes the rodeo which begins in the stadium at 7:30 p.m. Pre-rodeo concerts will continue every night of the rodeo with a different group each night. The Pioneer Days World Championship Rodeo, beginning on the 19 will run through the 24 every day except Sunday, July 21. Friday the 19 is Family Discount Night tickets are $12 for a family of 6. These tickets can be purchased by calling 399-8295. Produced by Cottan Rossser, one of the top rodeo producers in the country, the rodeo will feature top P.R.C.A. cowboys. Special appearances at the rodeo will include Leslie Patten, Miss Rodeo America on the 19; Terri Barrett, Miss Rodeo Australia on the 22 through the 24; and Sharlene Wells, Miss America on the 24. The Ogden Street Festival will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. Festival goers will be able to observe the State Chili Cook-Off and enjoy the rides, booths and free entertainment. Many local merchants will participate as the Downtown Ogden Sidewalk Sale continues. While there is no rodeo on Sunday, July 21, Odgen Pioneer Days does not stop. Elder Russell M. Nelson will speak at the Pioneer Day Fireside in the Dee Events Center. Elder Nelson is of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The fireside begins at 7 p.m. Also beginning at 7 p.m. on the 21, is a free concert at Lester Park on 25th and Jefferson. Performing at the concert is the Golden Spike Country Music Association. Sunday will be the first day of the Miss Rodeo Utah contest which will run through Wednesday July 24. The public is invited to attend various activities of the contest including the horsemanship contest at 7 a.m. at the OgdenWeber County Fairgrounds, and the personality and appearance luncheons both at noon on July 22 and 23 at Hilton Hotel. For reservations call 399-8214. The new Miss Rodeo Utah will be announced at the rodeo on the 24. She will then compete in the Miss Rodeo America contest in December. The contest is held in conjunction with the National Finals Rodeo; this year for the first time in Las Vegas Nevada. :3 4s.
