Carroll, English professor, won a first, second and third place in a recent national poetry contest. Dr. Carroll participated in an annual contest sponsored by the National Federation of State Poetry Societies on June 24-28. She won the three place standings as well as two honorable mentions and was one of the few to capture three pake standings. According to Dr. Carroll, two other place awards went to Barbara Cathrow of Salt Lake City and Nona Horsely of Ogden. There were a number of honorable mentiona given to Utah poets as well, she stated. Dr. Carroll said that there were 50 different categories with close to 10,000 entries. Her poem, "The Execution of Velma Barfield", won first place in the Florida State competion. "Soap Opera" took second place in a category sponsored by the 'Past Presidents' of NFSPS, and her poem titled "The Lie" won third in a contest sponsored by the Poet Laureates of Texas. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Utah and has attended the University of California at Berkeley, Oxford University, University College in Dublin and the University of Edinburg. I like quarters because I get a greater deal of education in less class time and I don't get bored with the class. Nancy Allred Senior I think changing to a semester program would be a good idea. A student would get more out of a class instead of all the information being crammed into one quarter. Lynette Sanders Freshman KWCR IS Back on the Streets... But only for a day. The material was indepth. A quarter is too short to really learn a subject. Mehran Faalzadeh Junior I would really like Weber to change to a semester schedule. A quarter program skips quickly through the material and it is hard to grasp all the information. Nicky Krieve Junior I think changing to a semester program would be a bad idea because it would disrupt students who have planned their schedules and they may need to take more classes. Volker Moulding Senior A semester schedule gives a student more time to finish the texts and it is cheaper because not as many texts need to be purchased. More material may be covered on a subject and students seem to learn more.
