Show Signpost September 30,1980 IK 7 Wildcats Upset Wolfpack 1 by Ron Bevan Nevada-Reno came to Weber State ready to put another notch in their win belt. After all, they were ranked sixth in the national Division I-AA polls. And fullback Frank Hawkins needed just 138 yards to capture eighth place on the all-time college football rushing list. Hawkins probably thought this would be easy after rushing for 199 yards against Montana State. But Danny Rich, Bruce Perry, and the rest of the Wildcat defensive squad must have never heard of Frank Hawkins. To them, he was just another runner they weren't going to let Dast them. And with this thought in mind, they held Hawkins to just 107 yards, with his longest run getting only eight yards. But containing Hawkins wasn't all the defense did. They stopped all other Wolfpack runners, recovered a fumbled ball, intercepted key passes, scored one touchdown and kept Nevada-Reno from scoring. Put that together with the 42-yard field goal by Roger Ruzek, and you come up with a 10-0 Wildcat upset. The Wildcats failed to take advantage of two scoring op portunities early in the game. First, safety Phil Singleton recovered a Wolfpack fumble, then Danny Rich intercepted a pass, giving Weber excellent scoring position on both occasions. But the Weber offense couldn't get close enough to the goal line and Ruzek missed on two field goal attempts before finding the mark on his third try in the second quarter to give the Wildcats a 3-0 Halftime lead. It wasn't until the final stanza that Bruce Perry intercepted a pass on the 18-yard line and ran it in for the score. Ruzek 's PAT gave Weber a more comfortable 10-0 lead. Then, with Reno threatening for the first time, Dennis McMaster picked off a pass in the end zone to stop the TV7 If 1 f woupacK irom scoring. ted 12 of 21 passes for 111 yards. Photo by Ron Bevan.
