Show Feb. 24, 1978 You've come a long way maybe? By Eunice Schlenker Second Installment The question of women's rights has been a continuing struggle between the sexes since Eve bit into the forbidden apple. The women's movement arose as an issue during the early 1800's, culminating in the final ratification of the women's suffrage amendment in 1920. A poignant issue long before the proponents of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) became vocal, "Women's Rights" were as hotly contested then as now. That there is nothing new about it is implicit in the excerpts taken from Blackwood's Magazine, circa 1858. The views espoused are by a staff-writer writing an all-male publication. His views, though written in an esoteric manner, nevertheless, strike a familiar chord only the jargon has changed! "What is all this cockling we hear about the abstract rights of woman, her wrongs, her privileges, and her place? The world is well-nigh 6,000 years old, . . . and yet it would appear, if we are to pay attention to certain shrill protests that, during all that while, the true mission of woman has been most woefully misunderstood, and her position shamefully degraded." The writer noted that if such were merely the utterances of a single female fanatic, we shouldn't consider the fact worthy of serious attention because in all ages some women "have asserted the rights of their sex to govern, lead, and legislate not only at home, but also in the immeasurably wider sphere of social and political arrangements." Here his pitch is that women aren't satisfied with domination in the home, but want their voice to be known in the political arena. He contended that ladies with the fine perception instinctive to their sex, felt that the time had come for the emergence of women and the assertion of rights formerly withheld. The females Child labor problems By Brian Johnson Campus Digest News Service Illegal child labor is still a problem. In a 12 state study of migrant workers, illegal child labor is still found. In the migrant society, children begin their work in the fields by the age of four and are expected to work full time by the time they are 10 years old. "Child labor is often an economic necessity for the migrant family," according to a study done for the U.S. Children's Bureau, an agency of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The problem of child labor is only present in agriculture occupations, the study said. "In the states surveyed, it was reported by farm worker organizations that a large number of children under age 12 are working illegally," the study added. Federal child labor laws allow children age 14 and older to work in agriculture. In some cases, children who are 12 can work with parental consent. A 10-year-old New Jersey migrant worker had parental consent when he fell asleep in the fields after work. A crop duster flew over, after everyone but the child left, and sprayed the field with pesticides. The child eventually died after spending two weeks in a coma. summed up their adversaries, and determined that they could compete with most of them on more than equal terms. He sounds a disparaging note for males here, then summarizes women's chances for success. From the senior males they could elicit sympathy, interest and encouragement. They could rely on the chivalry of those gentlemen whose literary fame had been established by female fostering and applause; "and with the remainder, comprising the main body of twaddlers, they felt themselves quite competent to deal." Thus they took the conduct of business into their own hands and became mistresses of the situation. Unfortunately, today's dilemma reminds us that the problem has not been so neatly disposed of in the broader sense. Blackwood's writer generously admits that men do not complain of this, rather they admire their judgment and courage in taking this avowed opportunity. (Doubtless, his reference is to an educated group who doesn't feel threatened by women's emancipation. He gives woman her due, but is unable to resist a derisive tone. "The fair pleaders exhibited no small dexterity in the invention and arrangements of their arguments, and it is well that they should be heard for what man is there who doesn't admit the vast power that female influence has exerted in purifying his ear and heightening the tone of his aspirations," he said. Moreover, he feels that if it be true, as alleged, the sphere of female occupation can be enlarged without detriment to the general interests of society, "It is unquestionably our duty to assist in the promotion of so desirable an object," (his tongue-in-cheek rejoiner) . Finally, he states that if the "Rights of Women" is just one of those popular phrases, easy to enumerate but difficult to define, Signpost it must be sifted as to particulars. That is the only possible way to determine whether there is a justifiable grievance, and how it may be redressed. Part of today's problem stems from the all-encompassing ramifications of the ERA amendment. Specifically, he suggests that ladies considered to be champions of their sex-complain that society has dealt harshly with women in keeping them from certain employment. Although this is a rather wide complaint, it must be closely scrutinized as to definition, he said. Sound familiar? This was written before the Civil War, and is a continuing harangue today.
