Late evening school registration was held Tuesday in the WSC Union ballroom from 5 to 8 p.m. Beginning Wednesday, evening students registered in the Administration Building. At the close of the first day registration, Monday, a total of 4,948 had signed for both day and evening classes, compared to the 5,484 who had registered on the similar day of a year ago, an overall drop of 538 students. At the close of registration for day students Monday, a total of 3,895 had signed for classes. This compares to the 4,073 students who had signed for day classes on the similar day a year ago, said Dean Milton C. Mecham. A total of 1,053 evening school students had signed for classes Monday evening, compared to the 1,411 registered on the comparable day a year ago. Mecham said that it looks like this year's trend of a 4.7 per cent decline in registration for the year as compared to last year is continuing. Bishop has indicated that he doesn't feel the veto action Utah Governor Scott Matheson has taken will not preclude the school going through the Board of Regents for action in the future. Bishop says he doesn't think the door is closed as far as the school is concerned and he understands the Governor's position on the matter. The amendment had been run through the state legislature quickly and Bishop feels the bill could need more analysis. The need for many additional classrooms, offices and other facilities faced by WSC could have been met if portions of the vacant St. Benedict's Hospital were made available to the college. The Utah Legislature had passed a bill giving the hospital complex to the state for use primarily as a veterans nursing home and some space would have been made available to the college. High priority needs that could be at least partially solved by parts of the hospital property would include, facilities for married student housing. "While hospital buildings could provide only 10 units for this need immediately, we could at least make a well deserved start in this area," said Bishop. The X-ray equipment that would be given to the college could serve both the hospital and the college, and better articulation between the college and hospital could be realized in joint use of this and some facilities. "Our building needs have been emphasized by us and the Utah Building Board in letters to the governor," President Bishop said. He noted that acquisition of capital facilities at this time when additional buildings are needed by the college are extremely hard, if not impossible to obtain. Members of the WSC Institutional Council were taken on a tour of the sprawling hospital complex by President Bishop and the vice presidents. The hospital site is six blocks north of campus.
