Show July 14, 1967. BANANAS, ETC. by Keith Fredrickson It is called many different things. Some call it pot and grass and mind-expanding and a gift from God. Science calls it hemp and hallucinatory. Police call it dangerous and illegal. Most people just call it marijuana. In the last few years, arrests in the United States for the illegal possession of marijuana have doubled. According to the Federal Narcotics Bureau, there were 7000 arrests in 1964 and 15,000 in 1966. Much of this increase has occurred at the college level. In fact, college officials in many metropolitan areas estimate up to one-fourth of all college students have tried or will try marijuana. Of course, no situation exists here at Weber State. ( I doubt whether one-fourth of WSC students have tried tobacco yet) But things could change. For years, law enforcement's main argument has not been centered against marijuana's effects. Rather, police have said pot is a stepping stone to . stronger stuff; that it leads to heroin and opium. The President's Crime Commission, in its February Report, says "there are too many marijuana users who do not graduate to heroin. "The desired dose of opiates tends to increase over time; but this is not true of marijuana. There is no scientific evidence that marijuana leads to heroin or opiates." Police also say that marijuana is dangerous because it is obtained through the same channels as heroin and opium. And that dope pushers will eventually entice pot users to stronger stuff. This argument is gradually turning into myth. The majority of today's marijuana users are not high school drop-outs qr jazz musicians. Rather, they are college students and they obtain it through their own channels. They buy it on trips to Mexico; they grow it in weed patches or they buy it from a friend who has a friend who knows a source. So you see, the marijuana situation could change. Proponents for legalized pot are building a strong case. While their opponents' claims are getting weaker. Now just suppose, that in the next 10 years, a federal panel-like the one that studied tobacco and lung cancer-says that marijuana is ju'st as safe as Coors beer and no more habit forming than Midol. Take it one step further and pretend that all marijuana laws are dropped and pot can be purchased in machines like regular cigarettes. Can you imagine the panic that would follow? Everyone from Chet Huntley to the Mitch Miller gang expanding their minds and thinking profound thoughts. Think of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir smoking pot and singing "The Birth of the Blues." And that makes me wonder. If the use of marijuana were legalized, would it be against the Word of Wisdom? 17 ash Your Car 25 New Sensational Coin Operated Car Wash Bring in that dirty car and have itclean in 5 minutes.
