Show Page 4 SIGNPOST FEBRUARY 2, 1962 rTrav now,Car w son Courts Campus Compass Locals Excel In Sid Events One of the big ski exents of the year, the annual ISA Giant Slalom Championship at Snow Basin was held last Sunday. Local Skiers Place Local people fared well in the events. Dale Miller of Ogden, competing against contestants much older than himself captured the Men's Class A Championship with a blazing time of 1.29.4 seconds. Others from Ogden who placed high were: Frank Cunningham, second in Men's Class B with a time of 1.46.7 ; Bruce Barker, fourth in Men's Class B with 1:28.0 and Thelma Salmas, second in Women's Class B with a 1:44 clocking.The height of the competitive skiing season will soon be under way, with crucial meets scheduled in Colorado. These meets will go a long way towards determing the members of the United States Olympic Team for the 1964 Winiter Olympics. Wildcats Score Well Weber's Wildcats have shown quite an offensive surge in their last two outings. Scoring respectively 84 points and 113 points they rang up an average of 98.5 points per game for the two contests ! Should the Wildcats remain on this scoring binge, they stand a good chance of winning the remainder of ItJheir league enoo'unters and seting up a play-off game with the Boise Broncos. Baseball is once again in the news, although spring training is more than1 a month away. The topic this time in 'the headlines, is an old one, salary-haggling between management and players. The most publicized struggle is between Roger Maris and the Yan kee brass. Roger, who swatted 61 homers laslt season, is asking for a $70,000 income, more than double his last year's pay. The Yankee front loffice is trying to hold down the hardest-hitting part of M and M to Ithe $60,000 bracket Mantle has already signed. Piersall Wants More Jimmy Piersall, the brillantly erratic outfielder, who was traded to Washington from Cleveland, is asking for a $15,000 raise from his estimated $30,000 salary earned at Cleveland last year. Jim feels that the 'publicity he will bring and his .320 batting average last year earn him this pay hike. Most of the other major league stars have signed their 1962 contracts, and are eagerly awaiting the call to the post for the two pennnit races in '62.. Golfing Tips Arnold Palmer, Golfer of the Year in 1960, recently gave seme tips to young golfers thinking of joining ithe pro trail in a recent magazine article. He advised that (the climb to the top of pro golf, is a long and rough one, demanding time and money at first. He also added the pro trail often is a lonely one, and suggested that it is a good idea to go on the circuit with a partner, just as he did. when he began his pro career. Weather Delays Gymnasium The magnificent, but incomplete conformation which stands on the Xipper south-east corner of the campus, better known as the gym, is slated for completion in the early spring. Wallace Baddley,, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, said that the roof is ready to be put on ,as soon as there is a break in the Weather. With the roof on, the majority of work remaining is inside and can be completed uninterrupted. All work is proceeding smoothly except for the occasional days of bad weather. Cats Display Fine Shooting Balance Combining the scores of Ron Thomas and Bruce Wilson for last week's victories over Snow and Carbon Colleges a mathematician comes up with 92 points. This averages out to be 46 points per game combined scores, and 23 points average per game for each of the sharp shooters, i Wilson scored 18 in the Snow game and Thomas 16. The following nighlt Thomas scored 30 points as if the basket were 5 feet high instead of 10 feet. Wilson hit 28 against Carbon. Oddly, each hit for a combined 46 points in the games. Excellent Scoring Balance Thomas and Wilson were not alone in the scoring however, as O'Dell and Garrett doubled the figures in Ithe Snow game also. In the Carbon contest, O'Dell again joined the high scoring duo along with Garrett and Trice. Wilson and O'Dell raised havoc With the Snow College crew on their hot firslt half shooting. The final score was 84 to 74, but only a last minute rally by the Snow cagers closed the gap to within 10 points. At one point in the game the Cats led 15-3. Carbon Game Rougher The Carbon Eagles afforded the Cats a more difficult victory. Paul Blaser of the Eagles scored five quick points to put the Carbon quintet in the lead early. Each enjoyed scoring surges throughout the first half of play, bull the Eagles led 49-45 at half-time.Weber Overtakes Carbon Weber overtook the Eagles during the third quarter 'and kept an uncomfortable lead for a time. Bult the Cats were not to be denied as they added bo their lead and built it to 106 to 88 at one point. Each team was well represented in the scoring. Five players from each team scored in the double figures. The final score was 113-101. Teams Clash Again This Week As was the case' against the Boise Broncos the week before, the Weber College Wildcats have not finished with Snow and Carbon Colleges. Motta's cagers will travel to meet the two teams on their own stamping grounds this week end. Weber will meet the Snow team tonight and Carbon Saturday evening. ATTENTION! All women students inter- P ested in participating- in the j Women's Intercollegiate Bow- U ling Tournament, are urged to register at the bowling desk. The tournament is conducted here on the Union Lanes and the scores mailed into the National TournamentCommittee. efoer EXeglers Avjcaif irag Yourney By Jerry Newell The Weber College Bowling Team, which was chosen last Saturday, Jan. 27, to compete in the Region 10 roll-off of the National Intercollegiate Bowling Tolurha-men consists of Cass Rivera, Tom Bingham, Lyman Kano, Pepper Coombs, Eugene Soto, and one alternate ' Dallas Buckway. Region 10 is composed of approximately 29 colleges located throughout the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. The number of prospective keg-lers trying out for the team was reduced to eight finalists after a 16-game preliminary ' roll-off. The eight finalists bowled an eight-game series Saturday, and these five bowlers with the highest scores in that series were chosen as the team. Cass Rivera rolled a total pin series of 1,492 in the finals, followed by Tom Bingham With a 1,454 series. The Weber team will bowl a-gainst .the University of Utah, and Utah State University bowling teams in a Tri-school Invitational tournament, which will be held on the Weber Union Lanes. This tournament will held before leaving for the Regional Tourney in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which is in February. No date has been scheduled for the Tri-school tourney, but students are urged to support the team. |
