Cats Compete At B Y U ijofes Oil By Brent Pulsipher Upon the election of the new studentbody officers we the students should turn over a new leaf and support the school activities. It is the pledge of the new officers to serve we the students in the best possible manner. In doing this they are assuming that We the students will aid them by giving our whole-hearted support. By support I mean participation in the activities and voicing our opinions on the problems and decisions which confront the studentbody. After all our government is run much the same as that of the United States and it is our right to tell our representatives what our opinion is on certain matters. It would therefore be to our benefit to do those things which have been stated. As our officers vow so should we. In the recent weeks we have witnessed some very peculiar weather in comparison to what should be the scene. The morning of sun and .afternoon rain are not uncommon in the days of late. The prospect of planning a successful picnic would seem to be very slight. No doubt we do need the moisture, but why it didn't come when we expected it I will never know. If any of the students have been holding rain dances I wish they would discontinue this practice until it is more appropriate. If they don't we'll soon be all wet. The ability of the students to pitch in i and study is becoming very sparse. The influx of spring fever along with the mid term lull are major contributors in the move to curb studies. The result is much more severe than can be seen at first glance and becomes quite evident when the tests and final papers begin to fall due. Another big reason for the lull is the student with but a few hours drawing away to foreign places that student who carries a heavier load. From the atmosphere around campus one would think we are all engaged in extracurricular activities taking on our studies as a- sideline. We are all engaged in a plan of goof-off now and pay-off later in hard labor. Some price we put on our education when we neglect our studies and put more emphasis on being with the crowd. Afterall its only your own money your spending. As this school year ends we are all more apparent of the summer vacation which will soon be a long awaited reality. What to do in the summer time is a big question. Some will work and some will play While others do a little of both. At any rate we will all have to decide what we are going to do. If you don't know then I suggest you notify the local travel bureau or your Texaco travel bureau. The reason I'm bringing up travel so early in the season is the fact that soon the Over the weekend the Track and Field team took the 90 mile trip to Provo and the Brigham Young University campus. The meet was concluded on Saturday with the tennis competition and finals in the track and field events The Wildcats met some tough competition in the court sport as only one team of three came out came out in the win column. This was Bob Marshall who won the singles oompetition. High Jump 1st In the high jump Phil Johnson came out the winner with a jump of six feet two and one-half inches just one-fourth of an inch off the record. This Saturday, April 29, the tracksters travel to Rexburg, Idaho for the Ricks College Invitational. This will be the third actual encounter for the team of of the year. The meet will match some of the ICAC teams against each other for the first time this year and will thus give some indication as to how the Wildcat team stands in relation to the oher teams. geology department will sponsor two field trips to the Southern parts of Utah. The first will start out on May 5 and will take the students and instructors to Zion and Bryce National Parks. The trips promise to be very interesting both from the geological and physiological aspects. I also hear that it is great for the public relations. During the past week the Weber College baseball team played what turned out to be a bad serious as far as the win column goes. On Friday, April 21, at John Affleck baseball park the Wildcats played a double header with the University of Utah Indians. In the first game the University's pitcher pitched a no-hitter and shut out the Weger College nine by a soore of 8 to 0. , After a short period between the first and second games the teams came out with new lineups and fresh pitchers ready to go another seven innings. Bill Thompson, a former Davis High pitcher, came out on the mound for the College with Keith Tribett doing the catching. The game got off to a good start when the Utes pulled ahead to a score of 2 to 1 after three innings. From that time on the game turned out to be a pitching duel with the Indians holding on and coming out ahead by the same score. On Monday, April 24, the Wildcats came out of the dugout to take on the Utah State University Aggies. This game once a-gain was played at Affleck park and began at 1:30 p.m. As may have been predicted from the previous meeting of the two teams the Wildcats would have their hands full. So was the case as the Aggies put .the Cats down by a very sound score of i3 to nothing. Such was the result of the first game played in somewhat unstable weather. The second game of the scheduled double-header was called off because of the Weather which became worse until if finally turned to snow. It as one of the few games that was snowed out instead of rained out. ICAC Begins The regular season games in the ICAC will get underway for the Weber Wildcats tomorrow at John Affleck baseball park when they tangle with the Boise Broncos. This game will begin at 1:30 and should be a good one. The Wildcats have a record of two wins and seven loses in their pre-iseason games. This does not tell a true story however, as all of the losses have been to the two teams mentioned above. And remember they are four year universities. The two wins were against the Snow College Badgers For an interesting afternoon all are invited to go to the park and what should be a good game. Before the Broncos return to Idaho they will play a double-header with the Cats tomorrow at Affleck beginning at 1:30 p.m. |
