Show v yv- -. v. - WEBER COLLEGE, OGDEN, UTAH, MAY 2, 1952 Number 11 Volume XV Student Leaders Picked for 1952-53 By Record Vote Final tabulation in a record-breaking upset student body election disclosed the student leaders for 1952-53: President, Val Lofareen; vice-president, Jane Powell; secretary Raelene Sommers; Treasurer, Allen Cook; business manager, Tom Burton. A vote of over 300 in the finals broke Weber's previous record and topped the average 185 total by nearly 150 ballots. Voting was upset during the finals held April 18 when two strong write-in candidates for president, Glen Dickson and Byran Renstrom, kept either of the finalist from reaching the necessary majority. Three students running for vice president as a result of a tie in the primaries also resulted in a lack of majority. These two offices were voted on again the following jVLon-day, April 21. Finalists in the elections included Val Lofgreen and Myron Child for president, Janet Powell and Shirley Burns vice president, Raelene Sommers and Barbara Birkhead secretary. I a pi 'J: ) l ghf Sophs Plan Outing At Lagoon May 9 Lagoon, popular fun spot of Utah, will provide the setting for the annual sophomore class sponsored outing. The event is scheduled for Friday, May 9, for the frosh and soph classes alike, according to nif-u Rip.hn.rds. sODhomore class president. "The Lagoon management has been especially generous", said Richards, "in allowing the following special arrangements." Lagoons will pay for the gasoline of any school bus used to transport students. (Plans are tentatively set for a school bus to make the trip). There will be no admission or parking charge. Special discount of one third will be allowed on all concessions, as well as free rides for faculty members. Westminster Offers Tuition Scholarship A full tuition scholarship to Westminster college, Salt Lake City, totalling $125.00 per year will be awarded to a member of this year's graduating class at Weber college, Westminster President Robert D. Seele, has notified President H. A. Dixon. Students in the upper half of the class are eligible. Anyone interested in the scholarship should see Charles Osmond, chairman of the scholarship committee, immediately. The scholarship is worth $62.50 each semester during the first year, President Seele said, and if the student maintains honor ratings "it will he renewed for the same amount the second year. L.D.S. Institute Holds Graduation May 18 i AYS Slates Recognition Banquet Wednesday; Officers To Be Announced Outstanding girls in eight big fields will be recognized and new Associated Women Students' officers will be announced at the AWS Recognition Banquet to be held at the Hotel Ben Lomond, Wednesday, April 7, at 7:00. The theme this year will be "God- "Fifty-six students will receive graduation diplomas from the L.D.S. Institute, adjacent to the Weber college campus, Sunday evening, May 18, at 8:00 p. m.," according to Nicholas Van Alfen, Institute di rector. Dr. . O. Smith, superintendent of Ogden City schools, will be the featured speaker. An oration given by a student will represent the graduates. This speaker is unannounced as yet. Musical selections will be provided by student participants from a male quartet, double trio and string ensemble. Sharon Mumford, Lamba Delta Sigma member, is m charge or tne printed programs, diplomas and processional march. The public is invited. The fields in which the top girls will be recognized are scholarship, friendliness, leadership, music, art, journalism, drama, and special service. Also during the banquet next year's AWS officers will be announced. This formal hanouet is one of the biggest affairs of the year for the girls of Weber college. Miss Welling noints out. Gardner Releases Induction Figures Total draft quota for the Spring and Summer months was released today by military advisor Dean Gardner. The total include both Utah and the United States for five months. Number to be called are Month Utah 43 44 23 70 70 interpretation: VS. 19,000 Month May. June July August Gardner's one not turning twenty during the summer can expect to remain a civilian another year." (Editor's note: The Utah fiqures for July and August and the U.S. figure for August are estimated.) 19,000 10,000 81,000 81,000 "Any- Weber college Alumni association, boasting an active organization this year, has recently made plans for a number of activities during the spring quarter. According to Douglas Burnett, Alumni association president, the annual breakfast for all alumni of Weber college will be held May 29, the morning of Commencement exercises. Said Mr. Burdett, "We urge all alumni of the college to attend." Committees are now at work making the various arrangements and it is expected to be a nice affair. A drive is being made to solicit new members for the association. Mr. Howard Ogden, head of the membership committee, encourages all former Weber students to join the association and participate in its activities. Admission fees are one dollar a year and ten dollars for a life-time membership. A married couple who have both attended the college can obtain a life-time membership for fifteen dollars. At a recent meeting the alumni also voted to discourage the policy of making Weber an affiliate of either the USAC or the University of Utah. Tonight at 9:00 p.m. in the Weber College Ballroom, Sigma Delta Pi will present their annual Bathing Beauty Contest according to club Vice President Glenn Dickson. The beauty contest will be held during the dance intermission at the ballroom instead of the swimming pool as in previous years. Contestants, chosen by Sigma members, are Gay Jones, Pat Holcraft, Marion RovpriHp'p .Tann Heiner. Norma Lichfield, Verne Kimber, and Bob bie Ann Alder. Five local business persons will appraise the seven lovelies and choose the winner. Workshop Group Sets Final Play 'Be Gay For Week of May 16 "Let Us Be Gay", a comedy by Rachel Crothers, and a play that has been a decided success with ihpptrp prniins throughout the land will conclude the years season of Teatre Workshop group May lb-zi under direction of Thatcher Allred, head of Speech and Drama at the college. The play concerns a varied group of people week-ending at the home of Mrs. Boucicault, a widow and socialite who entertains many people but is decieved by none of the pretenders or opportunists who come her way. Mrs. Boucicault is a blunt spoken and down to earth kind of women who calls things their right names and enjoys her reputation for honest bluntness. Actually she has a strong sense of good taste and proves also to nave a strong streak of sentiment and good old fashioned morals as will when the chips are down. Mainly the play is about Kitty Brown who has divorced her husband because of the issue of "the double standard" in her life, and who at Mrs. Boucicaults, unexpectedly meets, Bob, her ex-husband again, and finds that both she and he are still in love with each other. Delta Phi Banquet AH state chapter of Delta Phi will hold a banquet and dance In Salt Lake May 10, where Weber chapter's dream girl Pat Erickson will attend. Bay Newey and Mae Strand were elected Mr. and Miss Collegiate last week and announced at Alfa Rho and Sharmea's "Collegiate Promenade" Friday. Lamborn Rates Honors At AC Poetry Festival Marilyn Lamborn received superior in two fields last Saturday at the Tenth Annual Poetry FestivaZ held at the Utah State Agricultural college. She read, "Lullaby," by Robert Hyllier and "I Shall Never Love the Snow Again," by Robert Bridges. Miss Lamborn received a certificate of superior and the college received a volume of poetry by Alfred Edward Housman entitled the "Shropshire Lad." |
