Had they lost, Weber could have backed into the title, since the second place Snow Badgers dropped, a 67-65 game to Boise at Boise. 1 With one game remaining for each team, the Wildcats now hold a three-game lead over Dixie and Snow. Johnson Scores 21 Phil Johnson, playing one of his best games of the season, led the Wildcats to their clinching victory Saturday as he scored 21 points, had some timely assists and was brilliant on defense. Bob Belka also came in to hit some timely buckets as he poured through 19. But the high scorer of the game was CSU's George Rekoutis, a 5-11 guard, who scored 37 points, more that half of the loser's output.He was almost unstoppable as he hit from outside and drove a-gainst the Cats. Eric Gardner hit 18 ,and he and Rekoutis accounted for all but 12 of CSU's points. Behind By 12 Weber fell behind by 12 points in the first half, but came back to tie the score at 35-35 at half time. The Wildcats again had trouble in the second half as they .again trailed by 12 points with the clock showing 7:35 remaining. But Mike Garrett, who had only eight points, hit three quick field goals. With an assist from Johnson and Belka they went ahead with about four minutes to go. Mike Sivulich played only about 20 minutes as he ran into foul trouble and had the fifth one called soon after the second half started. Reserve Plays Big Role Reserve Bert Hammond and Bob Belka provided the spark to lead the Wildcats to their win Friday ,as each hit 19 points. It was a game that saw most of the Weber squad in foul trouble during all of the second half. Starters Phil Johnson and Mike Sivulich fouled out early in the second half, and Hammond, Belka and Mike Garrett played most of that half, each With four fouls. Belka had his fourth foul called late in the first half and sat out more than 10 minutes of the game. Erickson, who led all scoring with 25 points, had only one field goal against Johnson, but then broke loose to score 20 of his 25 Charity Shots Ice Game A couple of charity pitches by Hammond iced the game with two seconds remaining. The Rebels had a chance to go ahead as Jones missed a foul pitch about 15 seconds earlier. The Wildcats started off cold as they fell 10 points behind at 26-16 midway through the first hal(f. But the Visitors calught Dixie with two minutes left and went ahead, 39-34 at halftime. Weber then extended the margin to nine points with the second half only three minutes old, but then the Rebels began pecking away at the lead they caught the Wildcats in the final seconds. Dixie shot 51 per cent from the field in the second half. Busy Week Starts Tuesday The Wildcats Closed out their conference schedule Tuesday when they met the Ricks Vikings at 8 p.m. in the Bonneville gymnasium. This contest was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved ahead to accomodate the Vikings, who are on their way home after a weekend series in Southern Utah. Then on Wednesday, Weber traveled to Pocatello, Idaho, where they beat Idaho State College Frosh, a team it had trouble beating here in Ogden earlier in the season. The Cats returned hame Wednesday for a game against Utah State University Frosh on the Ben Lomond High School court. The Aggie Frosh polished off a solid University of Utah freshmen club Satuday to post their biggest Win of the season. No Push-over Coach Motta was not expecting any pushover Tuesday, since the Vikings proved they can win on the road, edging Dixie at St. George Saturday, 75-69. It was the third victory of the season for Ricks against eight losses. Starters for Ricks were Roger Wilson (6-2) and Evan Golding (6-2) at forwards, Ron Johnson (6-3) at center, and Brent Hol-man (6-0) and Brent Bean (6-0) at guards. Before Tuesday's game Coach Motta, who has been using nine players about equal time, was reluctant to name his starters He said it will depend on how some of the players shake their colds. Several members of the Weber squad were fighting colds as they returned home Sunday from their successful road trip. None of the illnesses seemed serious and Coach Motta was confident everyone would be ready for the Ricks game. Weber won the conference by one of the widest margins in recent years. With the one game remaining, the Wildcats hold a three-game bulge over second place Snow, which was defeated at Boise Saturday. February 24, 1961 Ariz. College to Play Cats Eastern Arizona College of Thatcher, Arizona, an independent school, Will be in Ogden next week for a best of three game series with the Wildcats. This series opens Monday, Feb., 27, with the second game Feb. 28. If a third game is needed, it will be played March 1. All games are scheduled at the Bonneville High School. Winner To Go To Kansas The winner of this series will represent Region One in the National Junior College tournament at Hutchinson, Kansas, beginning March 14. I mean in shape for sports. Next on the agenda is foul pitch, which will take place today after the basketball games. Six members from each team will make twenty foul pitches, and the highest scoring teams will win.
