WEBER COLLEGE SIGNPOST OGDEN, UTAH Vol. XXI No. 32 October 17, 1958 QUEEN ELECTIONS TODAY Ben Lomond Ball Room Will Host Best Dress Affair "You don't have to have a long neck, long legs, and webbed feet to go dancing, October 18th, when Sigma sponsors the annual Phoenicopterus Ruber, or as it is more commonly known, Flamingo Dance," Said Jay Ewert, President of i bigma. The best dress dance will be held at 9 o'clock in the Hotel Ben Lomond Ball Room, where the traditional Homecoming Queen's name will be disclosed. The club has brought up the Dave Jorgen-sen Orchestra from Salt Lake for the occasion. Hypnotist Due at Weber Dr. Franz J. Polgar, one of the country's leading hypnotists, will appear October 22 in the second of a series of performances sponsored by the Weber College Lecture and Artists. The presentation will be in the Ogden High School auditorium with a matinee and evening performance. Season tickets will be honored. Band Has Appeared The U. S. Air Force Band played to large crowds at two performances Sept. 30. This was the first in the series of programs directed by this group. Dr. Polgar has appeared before some 300 audiences, leaving tnem happily befuddled by his implausible feats. Probably his most outstanding accomplishment was to locate a small coin purse which was hidden from him in a locksmith's safe in the sub-basement of the Empire State Building. Many to Come Others to appear with the Lecture and Artists Series will be Dr. George W. Crane, psychologist and newspaper columnist, Nov. 11; Bud Helmericks, Arctic explorer and author, Feb. 3. The Gateway Singers, a singing quartet, will appear Feb. 17 ; Karl Robinson, who will present his color-film story of some of the most beautiful spots in Europe, March 20, and Charles Egbert, an adventurer and motion picture producer, April 0. Sigma's advisor, Dr. Earl Smart; President Jay Ewert;Vice-president Bill Nicholls; Secretary Ron Parker; Treasurer Phil Palmer; and Sergeant-at-Arms Jim Case, all seem to agree that it's Weber College's first big, club-sponsored dance of the year and everyone should get behind it for lots of fun. Activities galore will highlight Weber College's annual Homecoming Week beginning today with the election of the queen and her attendants and continuing through next Friday. The week of festivities will include the election of the queen, a platter party, appearance of the Great Polgar, alumni banquet, alumni assembly, parade, football game and dance. Homecoming ,Week will reach its climax October 24, when most of the student activities will be held. The homecoming game with Ricks Junior College and the dance immediately after the game will be the standout affairs for most WTeber College students. Journalism Meet To Be Staged Here "The responsibility of a free press in a free world" will be the theme of the Eighth Publications Workshop, to convene here Oct. 25 in the social science building. Northern Utah counties including Weber, Davis, Box Elder and Morgan, will be represented here during the meet. Editorial writer, H. F. Kretch-man of the Salt Lake Tribune is slated to give the keynote address. Many Subjects Subjects to be covered during the session are reporting and editing, advertising, planning, photography, art layout, sports, writing, magazines, and yearbook. Speakers to be featured will be Charles Garver, Salt Lake Tribune; Mark Garney, Ogden Standard Examiner; Veil O'Brien, Ogden Standard Examiner; Jerry Ca-hill, Deseret News; Jim Mortimer, Deseret News, Dexter Ellis, Ogden Standard Examiner. Parking will be in the area south of the Social Science Building. WIDELY ACCLAIMED Utah Symphony Slated The Utah State Symphony will make the first of seven appearances in Ogden, October 27th. This program is of joint sponsoi-ship between Weber College and Ogden Community. Maurice Abravanel will be conducting the 8-" or more veteran musicians. The symphony has won recent acclaim in a newly recorded oratorio, and in the Saint Saens Organ Symphony. The symphony has also waxed recently "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris. Abravanel called his musicians together Oct. 14 to rehearse for their first appearance of the sea son in Salt Lake City, Oct. 24. Paul Whitman is also slated to make a return appearance with the Symphony in Ogden, November 13. A seven concert series such as the Utah State Symphony is presenting here would cost $25 if tickets had to be purchased. Weber College students will be admitted free. Student activities will begin Monday night with a Platter Party Dance in the college ballroom. This will be a no-date affair and will be 10 cents per person admission charge. There will be dance contests in four categories Latin American, Fox Trot, Bop, and Jitterbug and winning couples will be awarded prizes. More to Come This phase of Homecoming Week is sponsored by Jim Watts, stu-dentbody advisor, and Marva Gregory and Marvin Peterson, faculty advisors. Frank J. Polgar, probably the nation's outstanding hypnotist, will be featured in a special program Tuesday at 8 p. m. Admission will be by student tickets. The annual alumni banquet will be held Thursday at 7:30 p. m. in the Canton Cafe. The banquet and program will be directed by La-Mar Buckner, alumni; L. C. Evans, faculty advisor, and Jim Watts, student advisor. Friday Assembly Weber's- alumni association will also present the assembly Friday at 11 a. m. School will be dismissed at 10:30 to enable students to at tend the assembly, said Milt Mee-cham, chairman of Homecoming Week. The parade which will feature floats from each of the social clubs, bands, and prominent Og. den citizens will begin Friday at 12:30. The parade will include the Weber College Band, Colleens, Ricks College Band, Ricks' ViciDettes, and the Weber High School Band and Girls Drill team. Rah, Rah, Team Immediately after the parade, there will be a football rally at the Egyptian Theater. Jim Hurst, studentbody president, and Robert Mikkelson, representing the faculty, are in charge of the parade and pep rally. The presentation of the Homecoming Queen and her attendants will take place at halftime of the football game. Colorful pre-game and halftime ceremonies may be enjoyed at the Weber-Ricks Homecoming game. Pre-game activities will get underway at 7:30 p. m. featuring the Weber High School and Ben Lomond High school bands. The half-time show will feature the Weber College band, Colleens, Ricks band, and the ViciDettes.
