Show 8 Summer Signpost-Thursday, July 5, 1984 SpORTS Strawberry, Bridger Offer Bites Early season fishing is holding up well under the heavy use of anxious Utah anglers. Reports from Glenn Davis, Division of Wildlife Resources fisheries management coordinator, indicate that Utah anglers can expect continued good fishing in lakes and reservoirs. Utah's northern region East Canyon and Causey reservoirs are producing good fishing while Echo and Rockport reservoirs remain quite low. Although rivers are high, some large brown trout are coming from the Ogden, Logan and Blacksmith Fork rivers. Warmwater anglers are finding good success at Willard Bay for crappie and channel cats and at Pineveiw Reservoir for crappie, bluegill and an occassional largemouth bass. The north slope of the Uintas is opening up a bit and some of the lower elevation lakes are being stocked. Bridger, Hoop, China Meadows, Lyman and Stateline are ice free, accessible and providing exciting fishing. . They will also be stocked with cat-chables.Davis rates fishing in the northeastern part of the state as fair to good. Fishermen trolling small shine lures near the surface of Flaming Gorge are landing a few good-sized kokanee; a few large lake trout also are being taken. The Green River continues to provide good fishing for larger rainbow and cutthroat trout, as well as this year's stocked fish. Crouse, Calder and East Park reservoirs are fair to good, but Steinaker and Red Fleet remain quiet. Bluegill fishing at Pelican Lake should be very good. Strawberry, Soldier Creek and Scofield reservoirs are still capturing the crowds in the central part of the state. Shore and boat anglers are doing equally well using a variety of baits. Deer Creek has slowed for shore anglers; trolling is producing well. In the south, Joes Valley Reservoir remains very good fishing is a nice place to get away from the crowds. Panguitch, Johnson's and Fish lakes are satisfying hundreds of anglers with nice-sized rainbown trout. Upper Lake Powell bass and walleye fishing is quite good, with an occassional crappie, channel catfish or striped bass adding some excitement. The striped bass limit has been increased to ten fish with only two over 30 inches long, which went into effect June 23, 1984. Marathon Helps Disabled Registrations are now being accepted for the 1984 Catch 5 Softball Marathon. The marathon, sponsored by Jerry Seiner Chevrolet and KSL-TV, will be held August 11 and 12 in Ogden, Salt Lake City, Utah County, Price and St. George. Over the past few years, the Softball Marathon, which benefits the Utah Easter SEal Society, has become one of the favorite events for Utah Softball teams. In 1983, over 110 teams participated and raised $36,120 for the programs and services sponsored by the Utah Easter Seal Society for Utah's disabled. Teams entering the Catch 5 Softball Marathon can earn a variety of prizes -t-shirts, soft drinks, beer, pizza parties from Domino's Pizza, Gulls' tickets and the Grand Prize ... a roundtrip for two to the World Series (courtesy of Continental Airlines). All prizes are awarded according to the amount of money raised for Easter Seals, rather than the scores. So teams of all abilities have a good shot at the Grand Prize. Teams of all types are welcome: fast or slow pitch, men's, women's or co-ed.
