Tracking the animal through the timber, the teacher nim-rods came upon Mrs. Bruin and her daughter nosing about the place where the two gentlemen had recently eaten their luncheon. "Of all the nerve," remarked Young ' coming right into our dining room uninvited." "Don't worry, they won't get much, commented Kasius, "when you re-r.'iember how much YOU left of the lunch." "Oh, I don't know about that. I noticed your appetite wasn't what you'd call dainty. But never mind that, who is to break up their little party?" Considerable discussion followed, for Pete claimed the honor as he had first sighted the tracks. Out of courtesy for this fact, he took the initial crack at the big game. "I'll shoot the old one and we can capture the cub. eh?" "All right, bang away." With a growl of rage and a quick swerve of the body, the larger bear turned in anger towards the liunter, who desirous of taking better aim, had crawled nearer the center of the clearing. Pete had shot the cub. and before they knew it, the mother was upon them. They went flying down the trail, Young in the lead, since he had been behind his companion. Kimball was never known in his youth as a sprinter; in fact in his home town he was thought too slow to even play stink base. Yet in this emergency he far outstripped his long-legged friend. "There was more to run for," as Male Watson would say. The frightened Youngster soon found himself out of the timber in a wide clearing near a deserted sawmill. Now out of danger, he turned to see how his comrade had fared. Not seeing Pete right at his heels, he began to think he had probably done a great injustice in thus speeding away from him. "Golly," he pondered, "suppose something has happened to him. Perhaps he has fallen and sprained, his ankle and this mad beast may even now be upon him." And, as he resolutely started back over the trail he had so shortly left at breakneck pace. "How would I ever make it right with Kate? Being already married, I couldn't very well play "Lucky Jim." Reflecting in this manner as he went along, the rescuer at last came to a small clearing to the side of the trail bordered by a clump of tall, slender aspens. Among them stood poor Pete on one leg, while the enraged animal circld constantly around him. "Great Heavens, Kim, hurry and shoot the brute. She has had me tnus for ten minutes, and it's unbearable.""What's the idea?' asked the ever Must-Know-Why. "Can't you see," answered the exasperated victim, "I'm standing on one leg and she thinks I'm a tree. It's beyond my endurance, but I'm afraid to change legs without her detecting the camouflage." With nervous hesitation, Young essayed his marksmanship, leaving the bruin dead on the field, while Pete fainted in utter exhaustion. A few draughts of cold water fetched him to, however, and the satisfied hunt- The WEBER FLORAL Thone FOUR-ONE-0 - QREENHOUSE, 740 28ih Si. Still the reflective English teacher continued to mummer to himself, "My George, what would I have done with Kate?"
