Show Page 4 SIGNPOST MAY 5, 1961 The big sports event on campus for this weekend will be the annual Weber College Invitational Track Meet to be held tomorrow at the Ben Lomond High School track beginning at 1:00 p.m. This event will see schools from ICAC competing .against each other for top honors. Among the schools which will be in attendance are Snow College of Ephr-iam, Carbon College fr.om Price, and Ricks College from Rexburg, Idaho. These are the certain participants while many other schools have been invited. The meet will be under the direction of the athletic department and Ray.Rhead, Weber track coach. Some indications of the outcome may be drawn from the participation of the schools in previous meets. 2nd Twice As you will remember in previous meets in which the Wildcat team has participated they have come up second place in two out of three meets. The first such honor coming in the Mesa Invitational held in Grand Junction, Colorado early this year. The second meet was the BYU Invitational ,at Provo. The Weber team did not place in this meet with such wide competition. . However, in the Ricks College Invitational held last weekend in Rexburg the Wildcats came out on top of all teams in the ICAC being beaten only by Montana State College. From all indications of these previous encounters the Wildcats will have a good chance of coming out on top of their own invitational meet. The Wildcats have not been beaten by an ICAC foe participating in the same meet which also gives light to those believing they can win on Saturday. This will be the only home town meet .of the year which gives good reason for a full house crowd out to see the competition tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Members hi Vrler s 'irack Team get in snape lor the Weber College Invitational tomorrow. w eber Collage 2 rsd At Ricks Invit Weber College finished second in the ninth annual Ricks College Invitational track meet The Montana State team had an overwhelming score of 115 'A points. By Brent Pulsipher With the coming of this mighty good weather comes the mighty tedious jobs that go with it. When the spring rains come followed by the awesome warmth of the spring days when it doesn't rain it may be assumed that the grass will grow and the trees will bloom. If you care to be a skeptical sort of character you might also assume that we will have a late spring chill which will do away with half of the fruit crop. Spring is simply full of assumptions which if one takes are sure enough to be the wrong ones. Try as we will we cannot count on the weather from one day to the next. As I started earlier in this little dissertation the grass will rise. Well I don't know about you but this sentence brings to mind the old lawn mower. Which in turn recalls its purpoce and that is to cut the lawns, which rise and rise some more if we don't put a stop to it through the utilization of this handy instrument. (Handy at getting the male gender on the hospital list under back trouble.) Frontier Yard Just who thought up the idea to put in lawn I do not know, but as for my self I would be quite satisfied to have the customary western frontier for a yard. A little touch of wild grass and a few good looking stink weeds never did kill a man. On the other hand I'm not so sure that the back injvries incurred while mowing the blasted lawn do not result in1 the death of some. Well we live in the world of automation and I suppose some clever inventor made a miscue somewhere along the way while making a pair of circular blade barber's sheers so he enlarged it and called it a lawn mower. This then entaled the problem of finding out what a lawn should look like. Its my guess that the bungling inventor then got tired of carrying his new contraption and found that it was much easier to push it along in front of himself. You can take it from there and if you see it the way I do he pushed the device over a small patch of grass. This lead to the idea that it would be better to get all the small patches together in one place so they could be cut at one time. This in turn looked good to some so they were soon out gathering some small patches of grass for their own yards. First Ordeal Getting back to spring and the first lawn cutting of the season it is fitting that I relate to you the sequence of events leading up to the actual cutting so you won't feel like the lone lawn mower. If your like me your doing real fine one Saturday afternoon when a female slave drive demands that the lawn be cut. After much reluctance and vain hiding the problem stares you straight in the face. Upon inquiring where the lawn mower is you are told its right where you put it the last time you used it. Automatically you assume you were smart Vin 1, Lose 2 In the baseball activity over the the weekend the Weber College ' Wildcats played three games, winning one and losing the other two. The games were the first conference games for the team. On Friday the Wildcats put an end to Boise Junior College's winning streak of fifteen when they downed the Bronco nine by a 3 to 1 oount. Ward Sawley went all the Way for Weber on the mound and g'ave up five scattered hits. The lone run for Boise came in the sixth inning on a triple and Weber's only error. On Saturday beginning at 11 am the Wildcats and Broncos met again this time for a double header. The Broncos were too much for the Cats in the double encounter as they came out on top by scores of 8 to 1, and 5 to 4. The Weber Wildcats will close out league play today and tomorrow when they travel to Rexburg for three games with the Ricks College Vikings. E-Men vs P-Men In the Men's Intramural program for the last week the activity has been concentrated on the Softball competition. The Excels team which was undefeated has been awaiting the outcome of the olay-offs between Sigma, Phcenix and LDS in order to see who they would meet for a championship play-off. As it happened the Phoenix team came out that opponent and played off yesterday at noon with the Excels nine. The P-men gained this honor by successfully downing the LDS team to go into a playoff with Sigma, which they won by a score of 11 to 10 on a home run. The playoff game with Excels came yesterday and the results were too late to be published in this issue. , enough to bring it in out of the weather, but on looking it turns out just the opposite. Rust Trouble Well, after a hard winter in the weather the mower is very solidly rusted into position and the baldes won't turn. In fact the wheels won't even budge. After many attempts to force the machine to work and several grass stains later you decide to sit the eldest of your offspring on the mower (to add weight) and tow it behind your car in an effort to loosen the wheels. On the third swing around the block the kid falls off and you find it necessary to interupt the conquest long enough to take him to the hospital. In the end you find yourself paying $15 for medical bills, $3 for cleaning bills, and a little over $15 for the mechanic at the machine shop who finally got the mower loosened up. I've almost decided to call this an annual expense and see what I can do about getting it listed among the deductions on the income tax form. |
