A Girl's Explanation Of Basketball Game By MARILYN ARNOLD Basketball is a game which is played with a ball and a basket. This is not an ordinary basket; it is a fancy job made with iron, and I guess that other stuff's string. This basket is fastened to a big piece of tin called a backboard. The backboard keeps the ball from goin into the balcony. Five boys play on a basketball team. There are two forwards, two guards, and one center. The forwards get the ball and then run around throwing it at the backboard. If the ball goes in the basket, they start all over again and let the other forwards throw it for awhile. The guards move their arms around and jump up and down by the other team's forwards. Sometimes they get the ball, and then they throw it to the forwards on their team. The center gets in the middle of the floor and tries to jump higher than someone on the other team. Basketball games have two umpires but they're called referees. They wear striped shirts and keep blowing whistles and twirling their arms so everyone will notice them. A basketball game has a lot of silly things. One of these is called a foul. They have two kinds. When you run into somebody or else hit them, it is personal; if you scream and holler when the referee does some dumb thing, it is technical. Another silly thing is a violation. This is when you step on a line, or run when you've got the ball. If It's The COTTOM SHIRT Again For Spring We've just taken on a whole new supply of these popular shirts . . . You'll find crisp solids colors, checks and stripes. from $3.95 RED M NYC CO The Weber-Boise game has always been the game of the year since rivalry has grown so keen between them. The purple and white team split a two game series several weeks ago, in two rip-snorting games, which is promised to be duplicated tonight. As long as the Weber Wildcats can keep the first and second place names it will be their glory for a stab at the tourney title at southern Utah and possibly further honors in Kansas. And He Won't, Either Three turtles decided to have a cup of coffee. Just as they got into the cafe it started to rain, so the biggest turtle said to the smallest turtle: "Go home and get the umbrella."The litt'e one replied: "I will, if you don't drink my coffee." "We won't," the other two promised. Two years later the big turtle said to the middle turtle: "Well, I guess he isn't coming back, so we might as well drink his coffee."Just then a voice called from outside the door: "If you do, I won't go." someone makes a foul, a boy or the other team gets a free throw. He gets to stand at a line in a little circle and throw the ball without anyone trying to stop him. When someone does a violation, a player on the other team takes the ball out of bounds and then throws it right back in again. When the game is over, some of the boys jump and holler, but some just stand there. "f. i s f 3 RICKS, WEBERS .5? Wildcats Ski Wildcat With Ski Tow Help The frontispiece of the campus interests seem to point to the ski hill. Several classes a week head for Snow Basin. The newly fallen snow is an additional sales talk. Several feet of snow put the idle skis and ski lift back into use. Wildcats have been sailing down "Wildcat" like wildcats. Many of the skiers have been leery of their ability to ski but seem to be doing alright, at least to those who are having as bad a time. A good sign has been that very few accidents have been had among the Wildcats. The three major sports which Weber engages in during the spring are baseball, track, and tennis. Getting off to a good fast start, track coach Clair Anderson has called a meeting of all students interested in track for 3:00 p. m. Monday, February 8, in the gym office. "Andy" invites all men interested in track and field events to be present. If you cannot be there, notify "Andy" of your interest anyway. There will only be four letter-men back this spring. They are Bruce Erickson, Dick White, Russ Whitaker, and Tom Kernes. The past three years Weber's track teams have placed third in the conference. If Weber is to better its position this year, we will need the support of a large percentage of the freshman class. So far five meets have been arranged. There will be four invitational meets at Nampa, Rex-burg, B. Y. U., and Westminster. The I.C.A.C. conference meet will be held in Salt Lake City. Baseball practice will get underway on March 1, with throwing practice in the gym. For three years now Weber has won the I.C.A.C. baseball championship. Coach Milt Mecham has eight returnees from last year. They are catchers Kent Stanger and Dale Younc-. pitchers Cliff Lee and Gary Belnap, first basemen Jim Dawson and Ted Favero, and outfielders Ronald Holman and Lew Wright. Weber will need a new third baseman and keystone combination. Coach Mecham states that all positions are wide open, and invites all ballplayers to compete. As soon as the courts are in shape during Spring Quarter, Coach Reed Swenson will start tennis practice. Bruce Stringham will be the only letterman returning this year. The team will participate in four matches with Westminster, a triangle meet with Westminster and Snow, an invitational meet at B.Y.U., and the conference meet in Salt Lake City.
