Ward, Ozmun Pitch No-hitter Phoenix Excelsior Dominate Softball By VANCE PACE It looks like the age-old race between Phoenix and Excelsior as the intramural race for points, as the teams come down to the wire. Phoenix II and Phoenix I stand undefeated in softball competition, with Excelsior I close behind with only one setback. "Joltin' " Joe Ward looks like the man to beat. He has a 3-0 record with two no-hitters to his credit. Duane Ozmun has a 2-0 record and has pitched one no-hitter. In the big game thus far this season Phoenix upset Excelsior 18 to 2. Glen Smith chucked a beautiful game for Excelsior, but he had a difficult time keeping his control. He loaded the sacks, and Darwin VanDeGraaff unloaded them with a hit and an error. Alpha Rho is playing heads up ball, having won two and lost one. They defeated the faculty 3-2, and Skull 16-0. But they suffered a pounding setback at the hands of Sigma 14-3. Sigma stands next in the league with one victory against three defeats. Excelsior I downed them 7 to 3. They were unsuccessful in starts against Phoenix I and Phoenix II. They looked good in their triumph over Alpha Rho. Skull has been unsuccessful in two starts this year. The main desire of the faculty is to keep the other team happy, and they have been very successful so far. They opened the season by letting Alpha Rho edge them S to 2. They have suffered setbacks from Excelsior II, 8 to 7, and Excelsior I, 5 to 3. They lucked out against Skull, as the game was rained out. Highlighting next week's activities will be games between Sigma an dthe faculty. Phoenix I will meet Excelsior I for possession of second place. The Independents were their most recent victims, as the Squaws knocked the ball all over the field, getting behind one hit pitching to defeat them 24-1. The Squaws are one victory from garnering their fourth first place, foul pitch, basketball, swimming and now soft-ball. It is rumored that they are counting on receiving the trophy this year. Sounds probable, eh?
