' SPORTS DIGEST Another sports personality around Weber College is Marv Peterson, former student of Morgan High ochool and presently a vocational major in his last year at W.C. A brief survey of what Marv has done in sports since his sophomore year in high school and the last two years at Weber is a splendid example of athletic ability not to be excelled for many years to come. Marv, as you may know, is the ooy who throws the stock, or what is sometimes called the Javelin, for the Weber track team. He started in his sophomore year and ;ook 3rd place in the state meet. But 3rd place was not for him so, after much time and practice during his junior year, he finally, took first place, and he now holds the Ciass B high school record for the javelin. Track is not his only sport; football rates high with him. He was selected for the high school all-state team in football during his junior and senior years and was voted captain of W.C. team last year. To get back at his track record, Marv, in an exhibition at Weber High School, threw the javelin 199 feet 4 inches last Wednesday; this being the greatest distance he has achieved. On May 12 at the ICAC Conference he set a new record of 195 feet 2xk inches, and broke another record at BYU Invitational by a mighty heave of 186 feet 7 inches. Marv will be leaving us after this quarter and with him goes the ICAC Conference, the BYU Invitational, and Northern Division records for the javelin. Weber's loss will be Fresno State's gain, and I know everyone here at W. C. wishes Marv the best of luck. Nelson-Ezzy to Spar Utah's Jack Nelson, of Tooele is the new sparring partner for heavyweight Ezzard Charles. Nelson will work out for Charles in preparation for "Ezzy's" May 30 fight in Chicago.According to a recent interview, Nelson hopes to gain some useful experience while working at this project which may be of great benefit to him in later bouts. 7 cranes There's nothing like nylon for enjoying your swims, or for drying off after. The Squad consists of (sitting) Eugene Anderson, Jerry Brett; (standing) Dennis Jay, Dell Foutz, Dick Slater, and Blaine Taylor. Alpha Rho Storms Intramural Track Alpha Rho Omega, low team on the intramural league, stormed the final competitioh in track to boost its place to third. Taking at least one place in everything but the broad jump, the six man team tallied 47 points against Sigma's 21. Phoenix was third and Excelsoir took fourth. Because the track was slow, and the teams had had little or no training, the times on the dashes and runs weren't too . impressive. All participants were restricted to wear spike-less gym shoes, which added to the difficulty in making any outstanding feats. Blaine Taylor, of Alpha Rho had the most points with a first in the 50 yard dash, first in the 100 yard dash, third in the 220, second in the 440, and tied for third in the high jump. Eugene Anderson, also from Alpha Rho took second in the 50, second in the 100, and second in the 880. With a very short rest, Andy trotted back up to the starting line and was able to nose out Taylor and Phoenix's Rey Arnold in the quarter-mile run. Jensen of Sigma was first in the 220, second in broad jump and tied for third in high jump and Wood of Excelsior picked up some hard points in the high jump, 50, and 220 for their respective teams. Jerry Brett heaved the javelin 151'8" for first and also took a second in the shot put. Other places were as follows: 50 yard dash Taylor (Alpha Football Practice Starts August 27 Football practice for next fall starts August 27th. Intramural News By Norm Burton The boy's intramurals came to a close this year with a sudden upset. Phoenix, the club who won the cup came all through the year with only losing one division; therefore they were confident in winning track but Alpho Rho came through with flying colors and won the track meet leaving Phoenix to take last place in the meet. Looking back over the year we find it has been a t close race as far as most games scores, but most teams lost out by not showing up for games and not entering in some of the divisions. The final tabulation for this year is a follows: Phoenix 1754 Sigma 958 Alpha Rho 473 Excelsior 356 Veber Cops Third En I.J. C. A. A. Meet Weber college took third under B.A.C. and Ricks Friday, May 11, in the Intermountain Junior College Invitational Track, meet held on the Westminster track. The last Signpost came out the day of the track meet and the news this week is late, but for those who missed the event, the information is vital. Marv Peterson broke the 1941 javelin record of 185 feet, 11 inches, by tossing the shaft 195 feet, seven and one-half inches. Childs took first in the 880-yard run and fourth in the 440. Olsen was fourth in the 120-high hurdles and he and Coleman tied for second in the pole vault. Brough was third in the mile, and Van Wagoner was third in the broad jump. Weber's team took third in the 880 relay. Glen Ashby and Dean Roberts snagged second place in the tennis events. Recently, Marv Peterson threw the javelin 199 feet in an exhibition throw at a tenth grade track meet. This is 3 and one-half feet beyond his record toss at Westminster.
