Here are a few stories of Wildcats who found romance on campus. Brittany Long and Trevor Moore: Teaching major Trevor Moore and business and multimedia major Brittany Long met in a WSU Adobe InDesign class more than a year ago, when Moore asked Long to go to a WSU event at Classic Skating. "There came a Weber State Classic Skating thing a little while later," Moore said, "and I asked Brittany at school if she was going to be there. She said yes. Then as it came closer, I called her to make sure she was going, and I told her I would pick her up, and she needed to give me her address. When I showed up, she was blown away that I actually was picking her up." Long has a little bit of a different version, however. "He invited me to Classic Skating in Layton," Long said. "I told him I would meet him there because I didn't want it to be a date. I wasn't going to go, and he showed up at my house. I had to go with him. I think we've been together every day since then. I tried to stand up my boyfriend. I tried." The two have been dating for more than a year and have learned to find attributes about the other that they like. The two met 11 years ago while working on the KWCR staff. "I first saw Stacey in the spring semester of 1999," Drew said. "I remember sitting at the back of the class. We met in Studio 77 in the library. I saw her at the front of the class, and I asked my friends, 'Who's that?" Drew said that he and Stacey became best friends after working together every day at the radio station over the summer of 1999 while Stacey was general manager. "There was a moment in time when we went out to have a hot chocolate together at Dee's on Washington, and PHOTO BY JERRICA ARCHIBALD I THE SIGNPOST I basically brought up that I'd like to take the next step," Drew said. "She said no. She said she didn't think it would be a good idea. Of course, in her mind, we had a working relationship at the station, and if we pursued a love relationship or anything beyond that and it didn't work out, it would jeopardize the professionalism that we had going on." Eventually, Drew and Stacey went to a concert together. "It was almost a year and a half after I had met her that I took her to a concert, and I SOURCE: BRITTANY LONG gave her a kiss on the cheek at her doorstep," Drew said. It was about four months later that Drew asked Stacey to marry him. Today, the couple has been married for 11 years and has three daughters. "Here we are going on 11 years, pure bliss," Drew said. "She made me want to be a better person. At that point in time, I was pretty happy just being a bum. I was just being the goofy kid on campus. For singles, there is an alternative holiday. It is called Singles Awareness Day. "Sometimes people mistake loneliness for being alone, and I think that being alone can be very healthy for people. I think being alone can be peaceful; being alone can bring solitude," said Dianna Abel, the director of Counseling and Psychological Services Center. "Or we can put all kinds of negative interpretations on it and make it seem like there is something wrong with us for being alone." There is even an alternative name for the day: PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY AMANDA LEWARK I THE SIGNPOST Some call it Singles Appreciation Day. "I think that they shouldn't be missing out on anything," said WSU student Halee Nelson about people spending Valentine's Day alone, "because I think that Valentine's Day, whether you have a valentine or not, is about telling people that you love in your life that you love them." Some of those memories might bring other feelings. A few Weber State University students shared some dating memories in honor of Valentine's Day. Jordanda Galvez said her worst date was in high school. Her date asked her out six months in advance. The day after he turned 16, he knocked on the front door to pick her up. The first thing he said was "Can I use your bathroom?" Because he'd just turned 16, his mother drove. Galvez said he didn't say a word the entire time, so she talked with his mother for the next 30 minutes until they arrived at their destination. When they arrived at their New Year's party, her date used the bathroom again, leaving Galvez alone with a room full of strangers. Galvez said they played some games, which she said was all right, but her date still didn't talk much. Then her date disappeared. He came out of the bathroom 20 minutes later, and he was crying. He claimed he had soap in his eyes. Galvez said she still isn't sure how he managed to get soap in his eyes. As the group played more games, Galvez's date said he didn't feel well. He sat out the entire time. Galvez spent the evening with people she'd never met before. When her date's mother returned with the minivan to take them home, Galvez spent the returning 30-minute trip talking to her. The next time the date spoke was when they arrived at Galvez's home, and he again asked to use the restroom. "All right, bye" were the words he used to end the date. Galvez said a second date, though he attempted it, didn't happen. Cody Manning said his worst date not only wasted his time, but made him miss an experience he'd been looking forward to. Manning said his date wanted to go out the same night as a BrighamYoung University football game. He said that since he is a huge BYU supporter, giving away his only ticket for See Dates page 8 |
