Wildcat women fall to Montana, take No. 2 seed in Big Sky Tournament The Lady 'Cats made the always dreaded trip into Montana, where the Wildcats have never swept the Montana-Montana State toad trip, last weekend with the hopes of winning the Big Sky Conference regularseasorTtitle and the rights to host the Big Sky Conference Tournament. Unfortunately, Weber State fell a little short of their goal after a tough loss to the Lady Grizzlies of the University of Montana Saturday night in Missoula, Mont. Thursday night, WSU took on the Bobcats of Montana State in Bozeman, Mont, and got a lot more than they wanted out of the Bobcats. Montana State led for most of the ball game while the Wildcats shot 22 percent from the field and trailed by seven at haiftime. After intermission, WSU increased its intensity and was able to take the lead for the first time with more than 13 minutes remaining in the game. During the final 10 minutes, there were a total of eight lead changes as the Bobcats gave Weber State a run for their money. The last 15 minutes proved to be a nail-biter as the Wildcats were able to keep MSU from scoring the game-winning basket and held on for a 56-55 win against the Bobcats. WSU was lead by Julie Gjertsen, who finished with 12 points, and Becky O'Neil, who had 11. The Wildcats won their 20th game of the season. WSU is the first team in the Big Sky to do so this season. The Lady 'Cats' hopes of winning the regular-season championship and hosting the conference tournament came to a sudden halt as the Lady Grizzlies of Montana were able to hold on for a 77-70 win over the Wildcats Saturday. The first half was a seesaw battle as the 'Cats and Grizzlies exchanged the lead five times. Montana would eventually pull away and take a 36-30 lead into haiftime. The second half didn't improve much for Weber State, as they were unable to regain the lead. Julie Gjertsen led the Wildcats with 20 points, while Freshman Sara Tuomi posted a career high of 18 points. With the win, Montana clinched the regular-season title and the rights to host the Big Sky Conference Tournament. Weber State, who will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will receive a bye and will travel to Montana to take on the highest seed remaining from the quarterfinals on Friday. Cats advance to semi-finals in Portland In a night of seesaw battles, the Weber State University men's basketball team had one of its own, escaping the stinger of the Sacramento State Hornets with a 74-71 victory to advance to the semi-finals of the Big Sky Conference Tournament. Fueled by a team-high 22 points from Coric Riggs and Lance Allred's 20th doubledouble of the season - 20 points and 14 rebounds - the Wildcats were able tofightoff a late game surge from the Hornets and come up with the win. Terrell Stovall added 20 points off the bench and David Patten, playing in his first game since Jan. 21, finished with nine points. The Wildcats will play the conference champions, Portland State, in Portland, Ore. on Tuesday night in the semi-finals of the Big Sky Conference Tournament. Game time is set for 9:30 p.m. MST.
