That's how much time is left before Jerry Graybcal welcomes his football team for the 1 998-99 football season. With seven returning starters on both the offensive and defensive side, Graybcal said he is looking forward for things to get underway. Players will begin reporting Aug. 13, with the first team meeting set for Aug. 16. The players will meet in preparation for their first game Sept. 3 against Montana Tech at 6 p.m. in the Stewart Stadium, where six of the II regular season games will be held. "We have a good returning team with a lot of talent," Graybcal said. "But what I was really looking for coming in here was strong senior leadership from the get-go." One of the things Graybcal said he wanted to focus on when he arrived in Ogden was the academic progress of Stop whining Bulls deserved to win By Preston Truman 1 senior sports reporter-1 ( The Signpost Memo to Michael Jordan: If you're going to retire, please let it be known now and stop giving Jazz fans hope that their aging team actually has a shot at winning the NBA Championship next season. Jordan hinted at retirement during the entire 1997-98 season, and many fans around the country came out in droves to sec "His Airncss" for what might be the last time. Jordan did not disappoint, leading the Bulls to their sixth NBA title in eight years after tak GET AWAY BEFORE YOU GO BACK!!! "I don't want to look at study hall schedule and see 15 names on it," Graybeal said. "I don't want a 2.0 student running my defense; I want somebody who's close to a 4.0 running things out there for us." With that in mind, Graybeal said he is going to be shaking things up a little on the defensive side. While coaching at Eastern Washington, he said the ing home his fifth MVP award and winning his 10th scoring title. Not bad for a 36-year-old who retired from basketball for 1 8 months to take up baseball. Avid Jazz fans are still steaming over the way the 1 998 Finals ended and for good reason but it really is time to GET OVER IT! No more shoulda, coulda, wouldas! Why not try looking at the bright side of the whole situation? Michael Jordan is not only the greatest basketball player of our time, but also die greatest athlete, and thousands of Jazz fans around the state were able to see him do what he docs best at tine Delta Center. Blame Dick Bavctta and the NBA for its prejudice against the Jazz all you want, but no matter how you look at it, Jordan cleanly beat us. With 40 seconds left and the Jazz up three points, Jordan scored a lay-up in about six seconds. That can be chalked up to poor rotating defense on the Jazz part. "I've been a linebacker coach before, and that is one of the positions we really wanted to strengthen. Adam Casto is going to be the guy we look to to get things fired up in practice and take a little leadership role," he said. Something Graybeal said he has been pleased with so far is the number of players who have stayed on campus during the summer to work out. "That shows me that they're serious about what we arc try ing to accom-plish here. It will only pay off for us in the long run," Graybeal said. Graybeal understands the recruiting process at WSU will be much different than what he was used to at Eastern Washington. He said trying to recruit players from Utah is difficult because of the numbers available and the competition between BYU, Utah and Utah State. Traditionally, players from junior colleges have been the main choice of the WSU football program. However, Graybeal wants to focus more on the in should have introduced Jordan to the Delta Center floor. Instead, Big Dawg watched, with the rest of us, as M.J. glided by him for the easy two. The Jazz were still up one with about 35 seconds and a fresh 24 on the shot clock. Karl Malone was posted on the block with John Stockton hovering around the 3-point line, looking for the right moment to find the Mailman. Stockton immediately threw tine ball to Malone, not seeing that Jordan had not followed Jeff Hornacckoutof the paint onto the weak side ofthe floor. If Stockton would have waited a few more seconds to throw the ball to Malone, Jordan would have had to clear the paint or be called for an illegal defense. Stockton's early pass allowed Jordan to sneak up behind Malone and strip the ball, leading to the last shot of tine 1 997-98 season. By this time, Jordan had the Jazz at his mercy. "We want to focus on kids coming out of high school, so we can develop them the way we want I'd rather recruit a kid that is 6-4, 190 and then beef him up when he gets here, than bring in a 6-4, 270 JC player who has to get used to a new program." When Graybcal took the job, he said he wanted to gain a solid understanding of the history and culture of Utah. Being a double history major, he went to the history department to get a couple of books on Utah's history and the LDS religion."I have no problem with the mission tiling and have tried to turn it into a positive for us," Graybeal said. "Every returned missionary I've talked to has had nothing but good things to say about his experience." After all the summer preparation and busy work, Graybeal is ready to get the season underway. "I've got my day planner packed with things to get done before it all gets started. I can't wait to start focusing on nothing but football." double team him, because of Steve Kerr's jump shot that finished off the Jazz in last year's Finals. Jordan started to drive into the lane, and with six seconds left, pulled his dribble back to lose a helpless Bryon Russell and nail the game-winning jump shot. Beautiful. What more could you ask for Jazz, fans? Michael Jordan at his best. All of you will look back on Jordan's heroics with pride, proudly boasting to your grandkids that you were there. You saw the greatest player ever do his thing. Just don't taint it by telling them about the referees or tine NBAs wanting the Bulls to win. Jazz fans are really in a win-win situation this summer. If Jordan decides to retire, we will be talking about Malone's ring size this time next year. If Jordan plays another year, fans around Utah will get a chance to redeem themselves and give credit where credit is due. EjpZ Rib Dt'iverr A Set Up.
