Show Semesters makes it hard for some students to count OA By Ryan Taylor senior news reporter-The Signpost Anticipation and sonic pessimism will greet the new semester today as Weber State University makes the change from the quarter schedule to semesters. As the final quarter of classes has come to a close, many students have mixed feelings as to what semesters will bring. "I think there arc positives and negatives with the change," said Ben Baker, a WSU computer science major. "I just think it will take time to get used to it." Other students, however, didn't share the same optimism. "I might change my mind eventually, but I don't have high hopes that semesters will be better than quarters," said Troy Waters, a finance major. The main reason students are dreading the switch to semesters is the longer classes. 10-week quarters will be replaced by 15-week semesters. "I don't like the idea of studying one subject for such a long time," said Jeff Hodson, an engineering major. "I used to be able to count down each quarter on both hands, now I've got to take off my shoes to finish." Students say the semester schedule and the longer classes can be seen as positives. "I like the fact we're starting early and we'll have more time off at Christmas and in the summer," Hodson said. "I think the longer classes will allow more time to complete projects and learn more material," Baker said. Others view more material as bad news. "Comprehensive finals will be a lot more difficult in the semester system," Waters said. Hodson echoes the same sentiments."It's going to be hard to cram for a final after 15 weeks of information," Hodson said. Hodson worries that one poor class or teacher in the semester system can make life miserable. "I had a bad experience with a class last quarter and I don't know if I would have been able to endure it for three months," Hodson said. Concerns and pessimism aside, students will now be able to judge for themselves because semesters have arrived.
