STEVE CONLIN THE SIGNPOST Investigations find Kiernan, Hill are heroes By CHERYL JENSEN Signpost news editor Investigations by the Weber County attorney and a WeberState University board haveconcluded Sgt. Kent Kiernan was justified in firing a weapon at student Mark Duong last month. Weber County Attorney Craig DeCaria said not only was Kiernan right, he was a hero in firing at Duong during a grievance hearing. "When a police officer discharges a weapon in the. line of duty, our office tries to determine if it was fired criminally," DeCaria said. "My decision was based on it being in the line of duty and in the defense of himself and others, and so he was cleared of all wrong- doing." Duong opened fire at a grievance hearing in the Shepherd Union Building on July 8. Kiernan responded by firing 10 rounds, police said. Duong died at 10:15 a.m. at McKay-Dee Hospital. DeCaria said attorneys looked at sheriff's reports, witness state ments and audio and video tapes. He said WSU attorney Richard Hill, who jumped on the gunman at the hearing, was also a hero. "In my view Kiernan was a hero, as was Richard Hill who did an absolutely brave thing-incredibly brave. He wrestled him (Duong) to the ground and held him there even though he was firing the gun or cer-tainlywascapableoffiringit. "Atone point he(Duong) said 'shootmeor I'll kill you,'" DeCaria said.
