Friday, June 1, 1990 Great Salt Lake Indian burial sites robbed (USAACIN)The Fremont Indians mysteriously disappeared from the shores of the GreatSalt Lake 1,000 years ago. Now the remains of the ancestors they buried there are leaving too. Somehave been packed out by grave robbers. Archaeologists are exhuming the rest toprevent further looting. A team of archaeologists is sifting through eons-old silt along the shores of America's largest dead sea, carefully extracting pottery shards, flint chips and bone fragments in an effort to prevent future looting and reveal the secrets of what happened to the Fremont people. The Fremont, and later the Northwest Shoshone, lived along the once-marshy areas of the Great Salt Lake northwest of Ogden, harvesting seeds, fish from the freshwater tributaries of the Weber and Ogden rivers, and waterfowl nesting in the area. But a four-year drought has caused the once-flooding lake to drop 7 feet, exposing miles of muddy shoreline that's as flat as a pool table and as brown as a sand trap. All that remains are scrubby vestiges of dead plants that look like dead Bonsai trees, and a few sprigs of tiny green pickle weed. About 25 professional and amateur archaeologists have exhumed the remains of a young person from a grave smaller in diameter than a bushel basket. Curled tightly in the fetal position, it is the first complete skeleton recovered so far, and scientists hope it will help unravel some of the secrets of the long-gone Fremont. "We've got to remove them before the looters do," says Steve Simms, assistant professor of anthropology at Utah State University in northern Utah. Of about 70 known burial sites, looters already have pillaged seven. They're (the looters) looking for grave goods," Simms says. "But the Indians who lived here were hunters and gatherers and had only crude tools." This Piece of Paper. . . Can Get You This Piece of Paper.
