The proposal called for the colonies to send representatives to represent them them in a colonial legislature , while the British would send a Viceroy to the Colonies to represent their sovereignty. It is estimated that 1800 new students will attend the four hour orientation before fall classes begin. Orientation coordinators Julie Arbuckle and Marylin Stephens have hired 16 student advisors to direct the freshmen and transfer students through the four-hour program. These upperclassmen have undergone a week-l-ong training session, complete with a comprehensive, written final exam, which Arbuckle says is a must for the orientation to be successful. "We were looking for appealing, competent upperclassmen, who could be in charge of between six to eight new students. They have been well taught in policies and procedures, as well as advising and interaction skills," said Arbuckle. "Advisors need accurate information. We want students to graduate in four years, and not in six just because of bad advisement." Arbuckle, who estimates that the academic advisement office sees more than 5,000 students each year, feels the freshman orientation program can be very beneficial for the rest of the school as well. "Students who don't develop relationships at school drop out," said Arbuckle. "This is a good chance for the new students to get to know their professors and department leaders, and a chance for the (See FRESHMEN on page 2) put into effect. This prompted the prominent leaders in each colony to meet in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on September 26, 1774, to discuss the British problem. All the colonies except Georgia attended the meeting and discussed what should be done about trying toget the British to reconcile the problem. It was the first time in Colonial America that the leaders of the different colonies recognized they had a common bond, that of being held non-representable by an authoritarian king. In the spring of 1775, the American Revolution first began at Lexington and Concord, in Massachusetts. One month later, the Continental Congress met again, and named George Washington as general of the newlky adopted Army. (See CONSTITUTION on page 3) J.Miller - in - Chief Sidelines See page 5 |
