Show 4C Continuing Education SlgnOff -A Look at Academics The School of Education saw a year of successes culminate with the announcement that Weber would gain control of its own Master of Education program. But the master's addition was just one of the success stories the school enjoyed. Many of the accomplishments came about as a result of internal effort by the members of the faculty of the three different departments: Teacher Education, Child and Family Studies, and Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (HPERD). "In the school this year, we were able to accomplish some things and not just sit back and wait," said Dr. Craig Campbell, acting dean of the School of Education. Some of the accomplishments in each of the three areas within the school are listed below. Teacher Education In its first year as a single department, the Department of Teacher Education continued to grow, boasting approximately 1,200 majors. Campbell felt one of the nicest things that happened in the department, which formerly had separate areas for elementary and secondary education, was the cooperative agreement developed between the local school districts. "Wc have had a good relationship with them and have had some of the faculty go out into the school districts and promote a sharing altitude. "The Master of Education program finally allows for some restructuring and flexibility. It will prove to be a real plus for Weber State, and it gives more of a menu option to choose from for students," said Campbell. The problem, he said, and it's a nice problem, is that increased enrollment might cause problems in the near future. "We may have to consider a cap enrollment, unless we get more space or faculty. "We could become the preeminent education teaching facility in the state," added Campbell. Child and Family Studies A two-year refinement program in the Department of Child and Family Studies concluded successfully ihis year. According to Campbell, the process, which develops and defines the Family Studies degree, will give students "much more job related skills," he said. The department graduated the highest number of students in the last five years and, along with the Families Alive conference held last September, that proved to be very rewarding. "We got more participation from the local schools," said Campbell. HPERD After eight years of wait and see, the HPERD department will now begin to sec visible signs of its new building. According to Campbell, the new building will help increase teaching emphasis on healthy lifestyle topics. "All those types of things will be encompassed in the new building. We still have a good mix of strong students, from the coaching to more academic disciplines. We're proud of the continued strong program," said Campbell. All in all, Campbell, who steps down as dean when Dr. Richard Jones returns from sabbatical in July, felt that despite the obvious financial shortages, faculty staff and students alike put out a healthy effort. "There are exceptional quality people around the campus. It has been an impressive combination. Hopefully we can maintain it." D Chris J.
