Show August 18, 1967 IN REVIEW by J. A. Wigley Many years ago a British book, not presently available in the United States, pretended to forecast the state of the world in the year 1984. In the story, according to scholars, the United States was allied with Britain in a perpetual war against an Asiatic alliance; Britons - and presumably Americans - lived under a dictator known as "Big Brother"; and everyone lived under the scrutiny of televison cameras alert for any secual peccadillo or sign of disloyalty to the state. Wether the state of Britain-or any of its associates in the European Confederation - - is more pleasant than in this venerable fantasy is controversial; but certainly Americans at the close of 1984 can look back on a uear of prosperity, peace, and pleasure. THE POLITICAL SCENE: Biggest news to Americans was that for the first time in four years many would say in eight years - - they wll have a President on January 1st. The Commission government instituted in 1980 to end the fiasco of the Axelson "administration" kept its promise by holding elections in November. Americans overwhelmingly chose General Caw-thorne, the nominee of both major political parties. "Cawthorne will be a greater president thant Reagan," many national leaders declared during the autumn. "Remember Reagan" pins flourished during the campaign, and obviously a multitude of voters felt that a vote for Cawthorne was a vote for the martyred Reagan. "We did what we had to do, and we brought the ship of state safely through the storm," said Emery Tarr, FBI chief who with mumoa men Haircuts STILL Clyde Froerer Ross Weaver Clyde's Barbershop I Block below Wosh. 332 - 36 Street BAMBOO WEEKDAYS i SUNDAYS J:00 P.M i0 1:00 A M. v4.1 J:C0 P M lo 2:00 A M. tTf . The Republican refusal to nominate a candidate to oppose Axelson, who had "defeated" President Reagan's bid for re-election in 1976 by wholesale ballot-box stuffing, precipitated the emergency that made joint FBI-CIA action imperative. Democratt insistence on re-nominating the mad Azelson, who, within a month and along with his vice-president Collins was declared insane, left the readers no choice. THE AMERICAN CHECK: By the beginning of 1984 it was clear that the American Check was a total success. Instituted in 1975, temporarily discontinued in 1978, and resumed in 1981, the American heck provides computer controls over every American and foreigner in the country. Reluctant in the earlier days, Americans by 1984 were cheerfully showing their tattooed serial numbers to their local FBI offices on regular bi-weekly schedules. "I don't believe a single person left the country without author T ization in the last three months of 1983," Mr. Tarr said this spring. "And with this new IBM set up . we know almost exactly where every man, woman, and child is at every hour of the day and night." Tarr did admit, however, that Living-Cars were making a difficult problem for his men, "but we've just about got that one licked, too." NOW! During the past 10 weeks, "Collegiate Weekly" has tried to bring a weekly review to you of the happenings in' Ogden . . . particularly Weber State College . . . and it's been a lot of fun. But it's left little time for doing some of the fun things this summer - - like taking long bicycle rides, mountain climbing, and just laying the summer. Between classes, work and putting out the paper, there just hasn't been any time for anything else. Mainly for this reason, "Collegiate Weekly" is suspending publication of its newspaper format with this issue. News is getting harder to dig up with the college between sessions and nothing seems to be planned until the middle of September. "Collegeiate Weekly" will appear on your news stands during the next three weeks, however, in magazine form - - such as our "1967 Fashion Preview." A different subject, one we think will interest you, will appear each week with pictures, articles and art work. Next week's issue will be ed Professional Employment Counseling Specialists For O Secretarial O Office O Sales Reps.
