Show April 3, 1964 Page 2 SIGNPOST AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 5 T ;Q GUEST EDITORIAL By Richard Brown and Bob Johnson We are certainly in agreement with your editorial expose concerning the extraction of student body funds in order to meet the egotistical interests of the bicep brigade. I have personally been associated with the football bizzare at Weber State College, under the direction of Coach Wally Nalder for the past two years. During this two-year period I was able to make several candid observations concerning Mr. Nalder and his football program (?). In 10 plus years he has won one conference championship, due to the fact that Boise Junior College played one less game than Weber. He has been ineffective in producing team spirit, and he has been, a poor economist. I personally know six athletes who could have had their education seriously affected by his mis-management of money: I recall that on my registration day of Winter Quarter 1964 I had completely registered and proceeded to collect my scholarship, however, without ANY notification I learned that Mr. Nalder had completely dropped my scholarship. When I questioned him concerning this matter he said that he had exceeded his budget and could no longer assist persons who would not be back next year. Yet on the other hand there is at least one individual on the football team who has in the past received from Mr. Nalder subsidies in excess of his football scholarship. But to further illuminate his inconsistencies it seems that he also dropped scholarships from athletes who will return next year. Do these actions of gross mis-management affect other divisions on school curriculum? The athletic program extracts $51,022 of an approximate $89,000 student fund and still comes up with a deficit. I personally think that this is a liability and not an asset under these Satanic conditions. Last year more students attended the three productions of "Music Man" than all of Nalder's home football games combined. "Music Man" contributed $3,700 to the student body fund as compared with a deficit spending of the athletic department. This illustrates for one example that the Music Department is directly affected by the extravagence of the Athletic Department. The Music Department shows a profit, and it also pays for its own activities. This spring the Weber State Singers are presenting a concert in order that they may go on their spring tour. The student body government is underwriting $1,350 but they must return $1,000 to the student body fund. If they make any money over this figure it also has to go back to the student body fund. The Weber State Singers wanted to start a scholarship fund for music majors in memorium of Glenn L. Hanson. The money for this fund would come from the profits from the spring concert, but these funds have to be returned to the student body fund. Do the profits created by the Music Department have to be made available for the use of the Athletic Department? Does a deficit spender have the right to subsidize an athlete on a scholarship whereas a contributor cannot provide scholarships from its own profits? Does the athletic program have a priority over the music program? John Elzey, of the drama department, reports that the Shakespearean play, "A Winter's Tale", is to be presented soon at Weber. There is a real need for persons interested in Shakesperean works, or acting in general, to try out for parts in the play. Any interested persons please get in touch with Mr. Elzey for more information. For those who are taking a class on Shakespeare, this is a good chance to apply new knowledge. m Editor Larry V. Letters to the Editor Registration procedures at Weber State College were inaugurated after a study was made of registration procedures at the University of Utah, Utah State University and Brigham Young University, by several members of the faculty. It was felt we had adopted a procedure for registration that would enable the student to register in the least possible amount of time and with the least amount of confusion. I believe everyone will agree with me that the more hurdles, the more controls and regulations you place in a student's way, the more difficult it becomes for him to register. We, therefore, attempted to set up a simple procedure for registration, and still get the student registered correctly. I agree with Mr. Dennis Vance Chamberlain and Mr. Elzey, honesty and integrity in the very, very few students on our campus leaves a lot to be desired. I was aware infractions occurred, and steps were taken to correct them. I personally dislike controls and regulations beyond what the normal individual needs, but if more rules and regulations are needed, I suppose we can institute rules and regulations to cover the few and penalize the majority. However, I prefer to operate, a registration procedure designed for the majority of students. Why not place a premium on student self -discipline! One thing Weber State College students can be assured of, and that is, we in the Registrar's Office will do all we can to correct errors we are making and to accept all constructive suggestions anyone would care to offer, if the individual offering the suggestions will make, a study of the entire registration picture.I still have faith in the honesty ORDER YOUR R S N G ' , - i YOU Fx GRADUATION RING the most respected symbol of your ed ucational achievement.
