Broadway Composer And Wife Will Appear On Lecture Series By LeRoy Yorgason Prolific Broadway composer Meredith Willson and his songstress wife, Rini, are scheduled to appear in the OgdenHigh School auditorium Feb. 20 at 8:15 p.m. Air. Willson, whose musical comedy, "The Music Man, will be produced by Weber College on Feb- 26-28, and his wife present a program here which they call "A Meredith Willson Social with Rini." A sort of musicalecture, their entertaining presentation is spiced with genial humor, refreshing comment and good music-NationwideMeredith Willson has won a nationwide audience for his musical compositions, his orchestral conducting and his humorous philosophy and writings. When "The Music Man" opened on Broadway late in 1957, he added musical comedy to his long string of ac-compliments and the critics predicted his show "would run for a decade." Broadway was equally enthralled bv Meredith's second musical, "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," (about the famous Colorado heiress who survived the Titanic disaster) which also ran and ran. On the horizon is a third musical based on the movie, "Miracle on 34th Street," which promises to continue his record of turnout hit shows. Play Role Meredith's dark-haired, petite wife Kini, co-starred with her musically gifted husband on various radio programs in the past, continues to play the role of helpmate and mentor that has characterized their successful marriage. Her spa'ikling personality and exceptional vocal talents add immeasurably to their joint platform effort.Mr. and Mrs. Willson arc appearing on the Weber College Lecture Series, and all students will be admitted on activity cards. 4 VOL. NO. 17 FEBRUARY 15, 1963 OGDEN, UTAH Chicago Opera Ballet Will Perform Monday The internationally known Chicago Opera Ballet will present an evening of colorful dancing precision Monday in the Ogden High School 'auditorium at 8:15 p.m. Now in its seventh sold-out-tonr The Largest Vleet Held By Bruce Hadfield The 27th annual high school forensic tournament sponsored by the Weber College departments of English and speech, will be held on campus Feb. 15 and 16, when more than 1,000 high school students gather to compete in debating, oratory, and extemporaneous speaking. More than 190 judges will be used to pick the scores of winners. They will come from the business, professional, and industrial pursuits, the deefnse bases, and from other places of employment in the area. i Students Judge Students themselves judge each other in the B debate division, made up of relatively inexperienced debaters. Dozens of mounted bronze plaques will be given to winners. Dr. 1. eland H- Monson, chairman of the division of humanities, is supervising the event, with K. Carl Green assisting. Gerald Grove is in charge of the men's division, assisted by Lawrence Evans, with Floyd Woodfield chairmaning the women's division. ' Cluster M- X i 1-sson and Glen Wiese are handling the division. Divisions The oratory and extemporaneous divisions are the responsibility of Glen W ard, assisted bv Thatcher Allred- Judges will be selected by Del-mar Dickson and Victor Hancoc.k. The event is the biggest forensic meet of its kind, so far as known, and will comprise more than 50 high schools from Utah and Idaho. Legislature Hears Group WC Madrigals under the direction of Glen Hanson will travel to the state capitol on Feb- 18, where they will present a special program upon invitation from the state popular musicals, "Show Boat" and "Music Man" will be featured- The legislators made special request that "Battle Hymn of the Republic" be sung. This number also includes a trumpet trio. There arc 26 members of the Madrigal group. season, the company features world-wide acclaimed stars, new personalities, and a polished corps de ballet with eye-filling costumes and decors to match. They have cntertained audiences throughout North America, Europe, and Great Britain with their vivid story portrayals set to ideal staging. Translates Ruth Page, who is accredited with the success of the company, ingeniously translates the opera story into a ballet, combining the elements of classic and contemporary styles. In terms of movement she relates the fun and gaiety of "The Merry Widow," the passions and conflicts of "Carmen," the poetry of "Camille," and others. This production is under the combined sponsorship of Weber College and Community Concert Association. Students are admitted free on their activity cards. Application Deadline For Signpost "All applications for the editor and business manager positions on the Signpost must be submitted to the Executive Council no later than Feb. 25." Mr. Wayne Schow, Signpost advisor announced this week. From the applications submitted, the council will select the new staff which will begin working spring quarter. Write Letter All applicants must write a letter to the council telling their qualifications and reasons why they would like to work on the paper. Tfey must also have three letters of recommendation from any three faculty members. |
