Show October 28, 1960 SIGNPOST Page 3 oplio Pledge By Larry Peer Phoenix enters the fifth week of school with light heads and heavy hearts. In checking membership records, Sydney has found that Phoenix lost fifteen men to the mission field of some church during the summer. Crud, I didn't realize there were any Christians in this fraternity . . . The annual PPP (Phoenix Pasture Party) turned into a riot as the great second place float was torn down. The tractor broke down, rushees swung hammers at members, the cow wouldn't give milk. Someone said that Terry Van Vleet was invited to a masquerade party, so he put deoder-ant in his beard and went as an armpit. Gosh . . . Congratulations to the following sophomores who were voted into Phoenix at the last meeting: Merlin Hanson, Ferron Johnson, and Jim Bowcut. We also are gay with the news of a newco-advisor, Hugh Jacobs. Mr. Jacobs is a former birdman, and works with Lou Gladwell in publicity. More feathers for the great fiery bird of Phoenix. Sharmea seems to be running off with WIA competition this year. Jill must be keeping the pink barbells warm. (This last dig comes as a result of Nancy Taylor who came to me with tears in her eyes, begging to have Sharmea mentioned in my column.) Well, since AWS has a dance tonight, I want to see Excelsior Sorority with their green enamel. So until next week, remember: the opinions expressed in this column are those of everyone but J. Bracken Lee. Sydney Gynt II P. S. I hear that Karen Seely quit T.K. in favor of Phoenix. Tough break. honor of our two winning floats. After what proved to be a very unusual scavenger hunt, we met in the "Tub" for food, games, and dancing. Thanks, Excels, for a really great party. In regards to Excels' float, I would like to pass the word on to the proud mother (?) of Phoenix that the revolving number on the front was their composite grade point. It's not quite up with Jens Traeden's 4.8, but Kent assures me they're working on it. O.T. offers their best wishes to the A.W.S. officers and council for a successful Jack O' Lantern Jubilee, and to the team for another big win tomorrow night. See you at the game? i O.T., Excels Heap BigPowWow By Carolyn Sommers I just received word that 50 pearls are missing from the "Miss Universe" crown. Has anyone seen any ; floating around : lately? I remem- ber seeing one on lSTnnpv Svcamore - - last Wednesday Miss Sommers It seems she was pinned for a day to a guy named Oliver. Speaking -of pins, Joan MacFar-land' is wearing one around these days that belongs to our new student body treasurer. Congratulations, Gary, on both accomplishments. O.T. is proud to announce the addition of a new papose to our tribe. Virginia Clifford lias accepted a bid to O.T. and we welcome her into the Club. Our congratulations to Sigma on the success of last week's Flamingo. From my point of observation, it looked like everyone was having a pretty good time especially those under the tables on the south side of the ballroom. Seriously, it was fabulous as usual.Wednesday night the squaws held a celebration with Excels in Swabbies Plead . . Best of luck from your Sister Club to Elder Dick Miller, Ex-President of Phoenix and past Treasurer of Weber College. The Sailor Squad, along with T.K. and Lambda Delta came out yictors in women's volleyball last week. Elected representatives of La Dianaeda are Jelaire Hancock to A.W.S., Linda Grange, secretary of Interclub, and Penny Christof-ferson to W.I. A. Merrill. Smith is our party chairman. Tuesday night found the ladies of Takai Kyoto and their rushees in the Peacock Room. Congrats on your second rush and good luck to O.T. for theirs next week. Welcome back to the world of news, Tappa Kegga; and cheers to your irresistible president. Say, how about a swinging beatnik party in your wine cellar? Note to Mr. Neat: I saw a drugstore Indian wearing an Excels sweater like the lost one advertised last week. If any of you gals need a date for the Jack-O-Lantern, Jubilee tonight, Mr. Moench has a new red suit for the occasion. Not Much Room; Somebody Leave! By Linda Monk Alio! Everyone seems to be moaning about studying and its sidelights (grades, etc.). Nancy Taylor and Maxine Morrison declare they're going inactive in school next quarter. Why wait until then, Nancy? Speaking of inactives, we've been trying to create some more in Sharmea. Our trouble is the girls just won't leave, even the Miss Monk married ones stay. However, we have high hopes for Dean and Shanna, maybe he will remember our cause. (We still love you, Shanna). j We've also tried : to get rid of Marilyn Stephens but she talks so much that we never get a word in between the giggles to convince her. She says she's hav- irig so-o-o much fun feeding lines that she's too busy to drop. (Oh, well, we'll work on somebody else.) Everybody has been given pep talks for the AWS dance, tonight. Kaye McGarry and Karen Zaugg have been giving their time and talents for the dance."Jack-O-Lantern Jubilee" (Jill takes the credit for the name) ought to be quite the hobgoblin hoedown. We'll see everyone at the witch ball . . . one good thing, Phoenix can come legally. A Bientot, "The Frenchies" P.S. For Larry who can't think of anything to say that is nice . . . a shovel fits nicely in his hand. A tail would fit fine too in the Phoenix mudslinging campaign. Wonderful Dance, Victorious Game By Gordon Affleck Sigma looks to the world with open eyes, at least they appear to be open. Late dates have some of the men a bit weary. How about it, Raleigh? Of course, they managed enough strength by Wednesday to beat the Rushee team from Excels, 6-0. - -Mug photos, in cluding peneten-tiary identification numbers should go on all pictures deposited in the garbage can in building four. The F. B.I. is trying to run down some bad boys from North College. Anyone rushing Sigma; just being yourself is a virtue that can't be duplicated by any ostentatious displays. Let this control your actions. Congratulations to the men in charge .of the Flamingo for a good party. Congratulations also to Mr-Connors for getting an article in the paper last week. I'm sure everybody enjoyed the late news. Jens Traeden, father of Phoenix, got in trouble with Paramount Dairy. He didn't return the milk kegs from their rush. A word from an old philosopher would be an oppropriate ending. Too bad I can't remember what he said. So just remember this. A rolling stone gathersmomentum. Mr. Affleck Successful Rush Oriental Style By Cheryl Paxton Ah So, Well the sociables of T.K. finally got a column in the paper. We hope to come on strong this quarter. We wish to offer belated Congrats to Sigma on their dance . . . fine show boys. Also congratulations to the "E" boys and the O.T. girls on their floats. The social ladies of T.K. enjoyed a fine second rush, held in the Peacock Room of the Canton. It really turned out great, and all 42 of the rushees had a good time. Even if Kenna Koinig did throw us a curve by getting the flu. We wish to thank all those who helped make our program and rush a success. We are looking forward to a social event (party) with Sigma, which promises to be a ball, blast and all those neat things. We are aso looking forward to a party with Phoenix, which sounds like great fun. Well the signs say quit. What are the signs ? Well '. . . Minnoch is complaining that a typewriter is too noisy for a library, and Fran is saying "all that?" So I guess I'd best sign off for now. It's the socials saying have a . . . have a . . . have a . . . well anyway be refreshed! ! ! P.S. We lost one of our members to Phoenix ... it seems that the Cream of Weber commercial wanted good looking legs? Pledges Pinned By Judy Hodson Time again has come to get out the pen and paper and report that Lambda Delta Sigma is rarin' to begin a quarter full of fun. Formal Pledge, one of the biggest occasions of the quarter, was held at the Institute, Oct. 20. Male pledges received their pins first when they held their ceremony at six o'clock that evening. Following short talks given by Brent McBride, John Ooenstein, Dave Wheeler, Larry Chestly, and Sylvan Jacobsen, and sixty men attending took the Lambda Delta Sigma oath and received their pins. Then the women pledges had their opportunity of pledging to Lambda Lelta. Active members Wanda Wimmer, Jean Edwards, Judy Cavalli, Elaine Walker, and Carolyn Rasmussen spoke on the five ideals of fellowship, leadership, intellectuality, cultural life, and religion. Pledges were then presented with their pledge pins. The 119 girls joined hands and sang the Lambda Delt hymn before closing. Pledges will now have to fulfill additional requirements before initiation. L.D.S. gals made a splended showing at the volleyball game Friday by defeating Sharmea in the first game of the quarter. With the determination these girls show, it won't be a bit surprising if Lambda Delt' does take the trophy. That's fair warning, WIA. |
