Show 1211 by Norman Bramble Signpost Staff Writer Over 1,200 students and their coaches will invade the upper campus today for the Weber College High School Forensic Tournament, the largest debate tournament in the United States. The participants will come from 39 high schools in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada said Dr. Monson who is officiating as chairman. All classrooms and most offices of the college as well as two churches near the campus will be used by the hundreds of contestants. Two Hundred Judges ' Over two hundred judges, including most of Weber's faculty, Forensic and English students, dozens of volunteers from Hill Air Force Base, Clearfield Naval Depot, Utah General Depot, and the community. Debating, oratorical and extemporaneous speaking contests will begin early today and continue into tomorrow afternoon. Registered for the events are 194 teams in men's debate division, 124 teams in the women's debate division, 199 students in extem poraneous speaking, and 177 in oratorical contests.Classes at Weber will be dismissed at ten today to clear the buildings for the tournament. Lunch Available Participants may obtain lunch in the main hall of the technical building. The Whip club under the direction of Mrs. Marva Gregory will handle the ordering and dispensing of the food. Also the facilities of the temporary union building will be made available to the debaters. Five coeds and five males have been picked as candidates to rule over the "Sweetheart Ball," Feb. 10. The traditional social will be held in the Berthana Ballroom. Otyokwa and Excelsior, the girls' and men's clubs that sponsor the event, picked the sweetheart candidates, but left it up to movie stars Ho make the final selection. Brent Waddups JoAnn Holmes Larry German Civic Theatre Readies Play The Ogden Civic Theatre presents, "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial," on Feb. 24-2.V-j(i, at the Ogden Theatre. This popular play by Herman Wouk involves a Naval trial and has an all male cast. Lead roles are played by Walter Pay and Tom Poppleton. Bob Bridgewater is the director. Mrs. Pingree, publicity manager, reports that this is the biggest production that this group puts on this year, and that all Weber students will be admitted half price (7."c) with student cards. Choose Girl Janet Leigh will determine the best-looking male, and Tony Curtis picks the prettiest coed. Photographs of the contenders have been mailed to the star's studios in Hollywood. The five coeds seeking the honor are Lois Alder, Judy Cavalli, Jo Ann Holmes; Joan McFarland, and Rosalie Moyes. On the male side are Larry German, Gary Jackson, Chris Jensen, Robert Petersen, and Brent Waddups. Identity Secret Identity of the "sweethearts" will not be made known until the intermission of the dance, when envelopes from the movie personalities will be opened. In charge of the big affair for Otyokwa is Betty Ballard, for Excelsior, Allan Peterson. To help them they have chosen a big committee.The president of Excels is Larry German, Otyokwa's lovely president is Noreen Howes. 1 Joan McFarland r y Robert Petersen Sharmea Girl Chosen 'Friendliest' Pat Berger was chosen Friendliest Girl on Campus Wednesday night at the women student's annual Friendship Banquet. Kathy Kittock and Cheryl Parry were named attendants. This week all girls on campus listed five girls they regard as Weber's friendliest. The girls whose names appeared most frequently on the lists were the win ners'. The Friendship Banquet, sponsored this year by Sharmea Social Clul), was at Barman's Cafe. President and Mrs. William P. Miller headed the guest list. Other guests were Dr. and Mrs. Robert A. Clarke; Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Hall; Mrs. Marva Gregory, and last year's Friendliest Girl winner, Mrs. Nancy Hollist Pace. |
