By Bob Wood, Signpost Editor Beginning Dec. 14, day school students may secure free tickets at the Treasurer's office for the Utah Symphony production of the "Nutcracker Suite" by Tchaikovsky to be presented Jan. 2 at Ogden High. Regular symphony tickets will be honored at this performance. The public may purchase tickets from the Bookmark for the matinee or for the evening performance. The Nutcracker Suite was commissioned in 1892 and was first produced at the St. Petersburg Opera. The story, written by E. T. A. Hoffman, centers around a Christmas tree party in progress at the home of a little girl named Marie. Gifts are exchanged and Marie receives a nutcracker in the shape of a funny old man. After the family has gone to sleep, the toys come to life and have a battle with the Mouse King and his armies. Marie comes down stairs and throws her slipper at the Mouse King. The nutcracker then changes into a handsome young prince who invites Marie. to go with him to his kingdom, Jam Mountain, the Land'of the Sugar-Plum Fairy. The music of Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky is perhaps better understood than that of most composers because of its "singable" melodies and the fact that it is remembered long after the performance. William Christensen, Ballet Director of the University of Utah, gives a particularly splendid performance in his flawless training of the University Corps De Ballet.
