Carl Green, Thatcher Allred, Robert S. Mikkelsen, Lawrence C. Evans and H. E. D. Redford. Chairman Leland H. Monson and Cluster Nilsson were absent when picture was taken. Leland Monson is general chairman of the annual affair with Mikkelsen and Evans heading the men's divisions and Floyd Woodfield taking over the "B" or self judging division. Redford and Allred will handle the extemporaneous speaking and Nilsson and Hancock are arranging for several hundred judges. Both students and professional personnel are judging debates today and Tomorrow. Opens to Public Tuesday "Basque of Kings" is 'Arena' Theater Offering; Cast of Twelve Headed by Kingston, Van De Graaff The "Arena Theatre" of Weber Collgee presents Maxwell Anderson's "Masque of Kings" as its winter quarter production, February 2Sth through March 3rd. The "Arena Theatre" formerly the Cellar Theatre, will be a new and exciting dramatic experience for many people in the Ogden area. The stage, located in the Moench building features a new individual overhead lighting system which adds greatly to the effect of the production. In With Actors Seating on all four sides of the stage gives the observer the illusion of being in on the action,which in Maxwell Anderson's verse drama centers around the Emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph, The Empress and their revolution minded son, The Crown Prince Rudolph. The story which is based on fact and is historically accurate deals with a plot to overthrow the monarchy of Franz Joseph and with the personal and political life of his only son. The cast, all members of the Weber College Theater Workshop, features Darwin Van De Graaff as the Emperor Franz Joseph, Sharon Wallace as the Empress, Margie Sudweeks as Mary Vetsera and Dick Kingston as the Crown Prince Rudolph. The production begins Tuesday the public and will again be staged in the new theater arrangement in the Moench Building on the Lower Campus. er. Patsy Seegmiller, Lisle Anderson, Bob Stromberg, Hal Stephens and Larry Chandler as Military and political advisors and friends of the royalty. Masque of Kings is directed by H. E. D. Redford, assisted by Kay Knight. The price of admission is r0c for students and faculty and $1.00 for the general public. Ihese prices have been established to give the members of the Weber College family more opportunity to attend these productions. In the past the Friday and Saturday performan ces have been sold out and patrons have been turned away. 1 his HOc price will, stimulate more student attendance and will insure that the Arena Theater will serve its purpose more efficiently. There will be no reserved seats so patrons are advised to arrive on time. See you at the theatre. Collage Communiiy Scsnd Seis Concert The Winter Concert featuring the Weber College-Community Orchestra and Weber College Concert Band will be presented in the Ogden High School Auditorium February at 8:15. The College will host instrumental students from the Jr. High School. General admission tickets will be 50c. The orchestra will play Angelus from "Scenes Pittoresques" among others and the band will feature The Purple Carnival March by Harry Alford. Admission for students will be by student tickets. High School Forensic Tournament Termed One of Country's Largest By Kent Berg Weber College, rich in forensic activity in the past, is spotlighted today and tomorrow, in national academic circles, for its Twentieth Annual Utah High School Debating Tournament." Perhaps the largest tournament of this type in the world, fourteen hundred speech students and debators are expected. They will come from thirty-five high schools spread over four states. Representation is looked to, from Idaho, -Wyoming, and Nevada as well as Utah. Outside Judges As many debate enthusiasts agree, it is felt that the one big attraction of this contest, other than its size, is the fact that the rounds of competition will be judged by responsible men and women as well as college students, trained in their English classes, for that purpose. Over two hundred men and women will judge the activities under the direction of Victor Hancock and Cluster Nilsson. The tournament is sponsored and Dehaiozs Welcome; Visa! . C. Campus Welcome debators! The Weber College studentbody and faculty holds out a hand of greeting to you as you visit our Weber College campus. We hope your short visit with us will be enjoyable. Our beautiful new campus should make quite an interesting sightseeing tour for visiting students. Students are encouraged to visit our self-service bookstore and lounge in Building One and also the Administrative and Registration Offices located there. Also of particular interest are our new bookstore, cafeteria, and student offices which are located in the annex behind Building Four. Students may be interested in the different departments of the school, the Home Economics department and the nursery school in Building Three, the music department, the Signpost office and the library in building four. conducted by the Weber College Department of English and Speech with Leland H. Monson, Chairman of the Division of the Humanities acting as general chairman, and E. Carl Green as assistant chairman. Five Divisions The Men's A division of debating will be held, under the direction of Larry Evans, at the lower campus. The women's division will be run by Robert Mikkelsen at the unpper campus along with the B divisions supervised by Floyd Woodfield. Oratory and extempore speaking will be directed by Thatcher Allred and H. E. D. Redford. Weber College will host the visiting debate coaches at a noon luncheon today on the upper campus. The problems of the tournament will be ironed out and future plans for mrre forensic activities will be discussed. The luncheon is under the supervision of E. Carl Green. Registration Notice Spring quarter registration has been set for March (i, 7, and H. Sophomores register Tuesday and Wednesday morning and freshmen, Wednesday afternoon and Thursday. The final registration date is March 17. Appointments may be picked up at the registrar's office before registration during hours which will be announced over the public address system next week. Fees will be the same as last spring quarter and those with full tuition scholarships will pay $10. |
