Show Page 4 SIGNPOST December 2, 1960 Varsify.Records First Win Over Alumni r?3 ICAC Football Season Ends As Weber Dumps Carbon, 31-6 Weber Upset By Badgers Going to the air when their ground game sputtered, the Snow College Badgers eked out a 13-7 win over the Weber Wildcats at Ephriam. It was the first win for the Snow club, and the second . loss for the Wildcats. ' Weber started good as Ken Cvl-lars returned the kickoff to the Weger 33. Two first down moved the ball to the Snow 40. The next series of plays found the Wildcats faced with a fourth down and one situation. A line plunge failed and the Badgers took over. . Snow Scores Snow's first tally came in the first quarter at the end of a 60 yard drive. With the ball on the Weber 10, Quarterback Rex Wright connected with a pass to Mike Rogers in the end zone, and the kick was good for a 7-0 lead. Three minutes before the end of the half, Snow intercepted a Weber pass on the Wildcat 36-yard line. A few plays later, Wright again passed for the TD, this time a 36 yarder to Roy Hack-ford, the try for point was futile as the teams left the field at the half with Snow in front by a 13-0 score. Weber Rallies Halfway through the fourth quarter, the Wildcats seemed to oome to life as they put together their only sustained drive of the game. Quarterback Lynn Smith capped an 80-yard drive in 11 plays with a sneak from two yards out and then converted to close out the scoring at 13-7. The Badgers compiled 15 first downs to 12 for the Wildcats. In net yards rushing, Snow had 169 compared to 183 for Weber. The home town boys edged Weber passing, as they completed 11 for 18 and 112 yards while Weber completed but 2 of 12 for 23 yards. Volleyball All-Stars Named By Siiisan Parkinson WIA Reporter The all-star volleyball team was selected for their outstanding skills and participation in intramurals this quarter. This team included Dixie Stanger, Jill Bateman, Ruth Walsh, Deanna Murray and Vicky Baird. This team will represent the school in the intercollegiate volleyball contests. B Team There is also a "B" team consisting of Gwen Weiser, Nona Valdez, Nancy Stanfield, Mary Jo Christensen, Lennis Jones, and Joyce Burnett. Both these teams will represent Weber at the University of Utah's playday, Satur day, December 3. Sharmea and Nurses fattened their leads in the intramural volleyball November 18 when they beat T.K and O.T. The schedule for Today's volleyball games are as follows: 3:15 O. T. vis. Independents O. Faculty vs Sharmea SUPPORT THE TEAM WEBER vs IDAHO STATE FROSH DECEMBER 6 Weber College nailed down second place in the ICAC football conference this year by virtue of their 31-6 romp over the Carbon Eagles in the closing game of the 1960 season. The Wildcats finished league competition with a 4-2 record and a 6-4 record for the overall season campaign. Team Effort The victory was a tremendous team effort as the Wildcats bounced back from a 13-7 upset at the hands of the lowly Snow Badgers the week before. The Weber offense netted 321 yards from scrimmage 'and 95 yards via the airways on the strength of six completions in 18 attempts. Carbon had 79 yard's passing and 127 yards rushing. ' Carbon did not threaten the Weber Defense until they recovered a fumble late in the game deep in Wildcat territory and quarterback Blaser ran it over from the one. Kanter Scores Midway in the first period, Weber took a Carbon punt on its own 13, and moved to the Carbon 11 in 13 plays. Dennis Kanter then powered his way into the end sone for the first Weber touchdown. . Date in the first period, Weber recovered a fumble on the Eagles' 37. The quarterback ended with the ball on the Carbon 6, .and Lynn Smith ran a keeper play over on the first play of the second period. A bad pass from center on a punt situation gave the Wildcats a break late in the first half as they took over on the Eagles' 40. Six plays and two penalties later, Kanter took a pitchout, circled left end and went over for the score. Weber held a 18-0 halftime lead. Corbridge Great Lynn Corbridge, who played a brilliant all-around game, scored from about 10 yards out in the third quarter a few plays after his beautiful 55-yard punt return was nullified by a clipping penalty. Smith converted for a 25-0 third quarter lead. The second unit gave Weber its final touchdown. After a bad punt gave the Wildcats the ball on the Carbon 35, Weber drove to the eight where Curtis Wilker ran it over, the Conversion attempt was no good and Weber came home with a 31-6 win and second place in the ICAC standings. Score by Quarters: Weber 6 12 7 6-31 Carbon 0 0 0 6-6 The Weber College Basketball team of 1960-1961 inaugerated its season last week with a close 69-68 win over the Alumni in the third annual Varsity-Alumni game. The game, the first won by the Varsity, was played before an estimated 2,500 fans at the new Bonneville High School Gymnasium. The Weber College Boosters sponsored the benefit game for Allen Holmes, who made his first public appearance in Ogden since he was injured in an automobile accident last August. Guards Shine Guards Mike Sivulich and Parker "Peay" Jenkins sparked a second half drive to lead the Wildcats to their victory. Weber trailed at the half by six points, but the speedy pair, put the Varsity in front in the second half. Jenkins led the Wildcat pointmakers with 21 while Sivulich scored 16. Eddie Tillman came through with 11 as Phil - Johnson swished 10. The Alumni was led by Ron Swenson who was high scorer for the evenning with 25 points, most of which came of his sweeping hooks. Bo Crain, a sparkplug from 'ast year'3 unit, hit for 12. Grads Lead The grads led most of the first half as they took a quick 8-2 lead. The Wildcats tied it up at 19 all midway through the first half. The score was tied five times before the Alumni stretched a 29-27 'ead to 36-30 a the half. Ben Lomond basketball coach Kenny Berrett hit a free throw to start the second half, but then Sivulich and Jenkins scored 12 quick points between them to put the Wildcats out in front at 45-40. Crain, Bob Harbertson and Blair Fcwers hit goals to send the Alums ahead for the only time in the half, but then Jenkins hit two fielders to put Weber in front to stay. Alums Rally With three minutes remaining, the score stood ' at 69-61, and it appeared as though the Varsity had a safe lead. The Alums suddenly caught fire when Swenson popped in six points and Dick Connolly added two more to put the Wildcats ahead by one, 69-68. With but one second remaining, Bob Belkia missed a foul shot. The Alums rebounded and called time. A last second desperation shot by Harbertson was almost tipped in by Crain, but the Wildcats pulled out the win by cutting the rally short. |
