OCTOBER 13, 1953, OGDEN, UTAH Officers What I have to say next has been said many, many times in the past and bears saying again many more times if Weber is to continue to grow as it indicated by this year's enrollment. We must establish and maintain a SCHOOL SPIRIT that will be noticed not only by the community but by other institutions and Officials of the State as well. At several of the functions we've had so far this year, especially the Freshman Week activities, the support was tremendous, while at others it was almost nil, much to the disappointment of those who had worked so hard to present them. The cold may have kept some of you from last Friday's game but just throw on another sweater and be sure to be there for the coming games. The lack of students at last year's basketball games was quite noticeable, and though the season hasn't begun, we should all realize the importance of attending those games. One last thing, remember the assemblies. Nothing can make the kids who work on them as a small audience. When we realize all that Weber does for us, it seems a small thing to ask that we do a little for ! Weber. CHEERIO! Miller, has a very optimistic outlook concerning Weber's future. .Dr. Miller believes that a 4-year Weber is inevitable, and he wants it to be known that we certainly have not given up hope of this. Dr. Miller said "we will continue to work for a 4-year Weber, and we believe that much hope lies in the future." He said the limited possibilities for Weber's future. He stated that all planning programs concerning the new buildings were directed toward a 4-year Weber. "We hope to build on the plans Dr. Dixon followed in his years at Weber", President Miller said. Concerning his promotion to Weber, Dr. Miller said he feels "very wonderful" about it, and he promised to work whole heartedly to make Weber an even more successful institution in the future than it has been in the past. Progress to move Weber to the new campus is being made every day. Work on the sprinkling system has started, and it is believed that the contract concerning the roads will be agreed upon by Oct. 15. Grading will soon start, and gravel will be put upon the roads this fall, but surfacing of the roads will not commence before spring. Dr. Miller graduated from Weber in 1926, and has been active in the educational field since 1929. From 1929 to 1935 Dr. Miller was an elementary principal and teacher in a Davis County School. He was director of pupil personnel and director of visual aids in the Weber County Schools from 1935-1937; assistant superintendent, clerk and treasurer of the Weber County Schools from 1937 to 1940 Dr. Miller was superintendent of the Weber County Schools, 1940- Number 1 CHEERIO! 1943; Principal of Ogden High, 1943-1946; state director of secondary education for five months in 1946. He was assistant superintendent of the Ogden City Schools from 1946 to 1951. President Miller was named assistant to state superintendent of Schools, E. Allen Bate-man Feb. 1, 1951. Dr. Miller has been holding down two positions since being appointed president of Weber, but he expects to be replaced as assistant state superintendent; therefore, he will be able to devote all his time to Weber. Rush Season Begins Rush season began October 7, when the women's social clubs staged a Freshmen tea. It was held at the Bertha Eccles hall from 7 to 9 p. m. Refreshments were served. Freshmen girls got acquainted with members and officers of all of the social clubs. Girls' clubs on the campus are Chanodo, Iota Tau Kappa, La Dianeada, Otyokwa and Sharmea. Several ruch parties are planned by both girls' and boys' clubs in the near future. Jill Heiner Wins Prize Bids were opened Thursday on certain desired delectables by anxious males on our fair campus. Box lunches were the prime sellers regardless of popular opinion. The auctioneer, Richard Heiser, was pleased with the brisk sale, but it wasn't as successful as we hoped, since some girls stayed home Friday night anyway. Jill Heiner won the prize for the best decorated box which featured a table setting for two. |
