Show WEBER COLLEGE OGDEN, UTAH FEBRUARY 14, 1958 Vol. XXI No. 24 the cgucrterback "sneak :. Page 6 jcg1s Pulls By Larry Tomlinson Every sports-minded student at Weber College is keeping his fingers crossed this week-end. The reason is the basketball team's two games against Ricks College tonight and tomorrow night. The game tonight is being played at Rexburg while tomorrow's contest is right here in Ogden at the Wildcat's 25th Street crackerbox. Weber needs wins in both games to assure an ICAC title and at least a split to stay in the running. Should Weber go on to cop the ICAC then the Cats' will play either Phoenix College or Eastern Arizona Junior College on a neutral floor fbr the right to compete in the national junior college championships, which are usually held in Hutchison, Kansas. These constitute a lot of ifs' but most fans feel the Wildcats can take the ICAC by just winning at Ricks tonight. Hope we don't sound trite in wishing the Cats' luck in their remaining games. It is very doubtful that Weber's basketball team could have been successful this year without good bench strength. The members of this year's squad who don't see much action have bolstered team morale all year with their endless encouragement to the team on the floor. Anyone listening to the radio broadcast of last week's Weber-Snow game at Ephraim probably thought an entourage of students made the trip along with the team. Every time Weber scored in that game it sounded like 50 to 75 people were cheering. As it happens, the cheers were all coming from the seven or eight players and team managers on the bench. It takes a lot of ability to play on Weber's varsity basketball team and a lot more loyalty to cheer the team on when you're sitting on the bench. Talent This year's team has plenty of basketball talent but most of the team members have been outstanding in other sports. Forward Jim Pierson played football, basketball and baseball at Ogden High. Blair Fowers played basketball and baseball at Weber High and participat ed in the All-Ameriean high school baseball game of 11)55. Gary Gardner was all-state high school basketball m 1957 and played foot ball and baseball at Davis High. JLarry .Burton was the region s ten nis champion in high school and Al Reeder lettered in basketball and baseball at Ben Lomond High. He participated m the All-Ameri can high school baseball game last year. Glen Cobia made the sec ond team all-region in football, basketball an4 track while performing for Bear River High. Rog er Tomlinson was a member of the all-state football and basketball squads in 195(! and played in the Ail-American baseball game of that year. Varg Christensen was a basketball and track man at Bear River. Ron Swenson, Jim Brittain and Allen "Stretch" Holmes are all basketball "specialists" but each has been outstanding in that sport. Swenson was picked on theall-region basketball team of 1956 while Jim Brittain made the all-state basketball team that year and performed for the University of Utah freshmen last season. Al Holmes was "All" everything in basketball at Phoenix High School, All-Southwest, All-Conference, All-American and even made the All-City team while playing for Phoenix Junior High School. Frank Berrett is another basketball specialist and did his playing at Weber High where he gainedall-region recognition. Val Weathers was a basketball and baseball player at Ogden High and starred in last year's All-American high school baseball game by batting in the winning run. Dick Connolley played some baseball at Ogden High but made basketball his chief sport and was picked for the all-region basketball squad. You re Smart to be Narrow-Minded rr I'M v 1 :) I ' 7 .
