Seeming to be engrossed in his work is Clifford Jenkins, one of the students in the Watchmaking department of Weber College. Clifford has at his disposal some of the finest, most advanced equipment in the business. 'Clockwatching" Is Just Part of Learning In 'Scotty's" Time Factory By Val Limburg Mr. "Scotty" McCormac's room is filled with interesting and unusual ticks, and his fascinated students probe the unending kinds and types of watches and clocks. Jamep McCormac is Weber College's watchmaking instructor who daily teaches a 10 credit hour course on watchmaking. 8 to 9 a. m. is devoted to lectures on the theories involving watchmaking. The rest of the time until noon is devoted to practical experience. The small class is intimate, and its friendly instructor is well liked. Much Light Needed Located on the upper southwest corner of the technical education building, the room is in a position where daylight can be absorbed in with the numerous artificial lights which are all essential for the work. Exacting Equipment This well-equipped room has probably the most modern machinery on campus. Among some of the unique machines are an instant demagnitizer; There's also a machine which tests the watch's capacity to hold out water, even under high pressure. Also, a delicate device which can feel the pulse of a running watch and in one minute tell how many seconds it loses or gains in several hours. With these unique instruments are other older standbys such as lathes, etc., to make and repair tools as well as watches. Miniature "Big Ben" Probably the most striking feature of the entire shop is a chime clock whose gold-colored system is encased in a crystal frame. The thing that sets this clock off from all the rest is the three different sets of chimes including that of the familiar Big Ben. Next to it, a slightly beaten wooden box reveal a U. S. Navy chronograph, rescued from a ship sunken by a Japan ese suicide plane in the Second World Wai After thorough repair, the class finds it as accurate as ever. Too Many Tiny Parts Necessary tools are furnished by the school for the first quarter; after that, .the student may purchase his own if he desires to do so. Some watches are repaired here and replacement parts are bought by "Scotty" himself. He'd hate to think what would happen if he had to requisition for thous-sands of hair-fine parts through the regular channels. As well as watch and clock woi-k, the class does some small instrument work. A few members occasionally travel to Hill Field to work on some of the aircraft mechanisms there. Only Four Year Course Mr. McCormac points out that this is probably the only four-year course taught at Weber. A student can start out knowing absolutely nothing about timepieces, and after taking up to four year of courses (each one being differ-3nt) he can become a near expert.Anyway, the class in T-215 is one in which the students can get away with "watching the clock." We know if things go as planned this will be the biggest and best dance of the year. The membership banquet was held Monday night at Bratten's Grotto. We extend a hearty welcome to the new squaws. Otyokwa is hostess for the Friendship Banquet Wednesday night. Every girl at Weber College should plan to be in attendance. At this time the "Friendliest Girl" will be announced. Sigma Congratulations to Phoenix and L. D. for winning the Snow Carnival sculpturing contest. The men of Sigma separated themselves from the boys in the intramural ski race. The hound Dog Trophy also came home to Sigma. A preview of coming events include the P. J. Dance on Feb. 22. Tickets will be out soon. Sigma is very proud of Larry Price who led us to victory in the Songfest. Good luck to Randy Rothy, a member of Sigma and secretary of A. M. S., who is leaving soon on a mission. Eight Ball of the week is Blabber Mouth Balantyne, professional rabble rouser. LDS. The "Guess What" party held last Wednesday turned out to really be fun for all when we went on a treasure hunt, and used the Bible to direct us. After scurrying around, food was served and to the surprise of everyone they ended up eating with kitchen ware. Dave Gunder-son tried to use an egg beater, and for some reason didn't eat as much as usual. Last Sunday was the Lambda Delta Sigma's "Initiation Ceremony," and all of the members saw the religious part of this group. Sweetheart's Late Date Show Can't Tell You the Name of the Picture, But It's a "Sweetheart" cause it gave them a rest from the fast parties. But the rest won't last long, another one will be Feb. 20, and you can expect anything because it is another secret the officers have, so keep that night open. Excels Following the dance tonight, Excels and OT will venture to the Arctic Circle for a banquet to top off the evening. Congratulations to the winners in the Snow Carnival contests last Friday. Special comment goes to Sigma and their great skiers. An Excels-Sigma party held at the lodge after the Carnival Friday, helped a few "straight arrows" tumble off the wagon. The party proved to be so successful that the men slept over night at the lodge and skied the next day. Congrats to Sigma and OT on capturing top spots at the Song Fest. Phoenix's soprano choir was the highlight of the evening; how does it feel to sing in the man's division this year? L. D. LaDianaeda wishes to extend congratulations to Otyokwa, Sigma, and Phoenix for their outstanding performance and victory at the Song Fest. Excelsior and Phoenix have shown the Swabbies a fun, fun, time at the recent parties. The LD crew became united as one at our membership banquet last Thursday, now we are sailing full steam ahead for a successful year. Sharmea Last night sixteen cute gals became "official" Pink Ladies at our membership banquet. We are pleased to have you join us gals. Congratulations to OT and Sigma for a terrific showing at the Songfest, and to LD and Phoenix for the snow sculpturing. The Snow Carnival was loads of fun, everyone got in the act, and Kay Rushton represented us in a great fashion. Best Wishes to TK, they are great girls who are out to give everyone competition. Next in sight is the Friendship Banquet, we'll see you there. Phoenix In the event that your coffee hasn't yet slopped on this part of the paper, here's some background reading material while you sit in the TUB and listen to "Raunchy." Ducks are cute, igloos are nice, but we like something heart warming with some real appeal (not apparel) and interest that wins prizes. We're all happy for the dolls of L D too; the octopus was well done. Congrats go to "queenie" Piner and "swish" Van Dyke. The party of the two clubs that grabbed four prizes was a real celebration last Monday. The cocoa and crumpets tasted good after the hearty ice skating. This is a bit late, but we haven't yet had a chance to give the good word to Sigma for the "spirited" win in the Song Fest a couple of weeks ago; also for taking the Hound Dog Trophy and the skiing bit of the intermurals. These boys are a hard bit to beat. It's good to know there's still competition around the campus. We'll be looking forward to the night of the pajama dance. And of course the very, very best of luck on the dance tonight, Excels and O T.
