FRANCES CARR Signpost Exchange Editor The greenery of Christmas brightens the homes of many American families as the activities of the season begin. As with many of the symbols of Christmas, the greens have their legends. To the Northern people of many years ago, the holly was a type of the Burning Bush, and so a symbol of the chaste maiden, chosen to be the Mother of Christ, whose being glowed with the sacred fire of the Holy Spirit. The tree has bright red berries shining out from dark spiny leaves of burnished green, and these speak of the blood drops which the cruel crown of thorns drew from the Saviour's brow, as once they had been the blood drops of the beautiful Balder, the ill-fated darling Valhalla. A quaint custom of some peoples was to wish the honey bees compliments of the season, and adorn the hive with a sprig of holly. Back to England The beginning of the use of greenery can be traced back to England when many years ago the "Rod of Joseph of Arimethea," a thorn bush at the Glastonbury Cathedral was said to blossom on Christmas. Later the calender was changed, dropping ten days. On Christmas day two thousand people gathered about the thorn bush to see if it would blossom. When the flowers failed to appear, the people refused to accept the new calendar. It was at one time customary to carry a branch of mistletoe in a procession to the high alter of York Cathedral, and there after proclaim a general indulgence and pardon of sins at the gates of the city. For years Mistletoe was regarded as a symbol of future hope and peace, it was said that at the sight of Mistletoe enemies would torget their enmities, drop arms. and embrace. Balder the Beautiful "Balder the Beautiful" is a myth dealing with mistletoe and holly. Balder, the son of Odin who was the king of the gods, was known as the god of light. He was always smiling and happy until a series of dreams warned him of his death. This worried his mother Frigga so she sent out messengers' to bid all living creatures, plants, metals, and stones to make a vow that they would not harm Balder. -They all readily took the oath, all but the harmless Mistletoe. Meanwhile Odin journeyed to hell on Sleipnir, his steed with eight legs, where he raised from the dead Valas, a prophetess. She confirmed his fears when she told Odin that Hodur, the god of darkness, Balder's blind brother would slay Balder. He returned to Friggas side and was greatly relieved to learn of the precautions she had taken. Joy and Relief Joy and relief filled the hearts of all the gods and soon they began casting their golden disks on the green plains of Ida, the playground of the gods. They soon became tired of this and knowing that nothing could harm Balder, began throwing all manner of weapons at him. Loki, the father of hell was extremely jealous of Balder, and when he saw that nothing could harm Balder, he became angry. With his usual cunning and malice, he discovered that the parasite Mistletoe had made no vows. Using magic arts, he compelled the plant to assume unknown hardness, and formed a shaft from the wooden stem. He rushed back to the green plains of Ida with his weapon where he met Hodur and instructed him to throw the shaft at Balder. Balder was killed. The radiance from him left and the land was filled with sorrow. Today, the sorrows of the parasite mistletoe are forgotten, and anxious young ladies stand beneath a sprig of it for the purpose of getting kisses. Just remember, for each kiss, a white berry should be plucked off. 1 I I II U w NEED AUTO GLASS? I Ogden Auto Parts and a Glass Co. 2 3C3 - 22nd St. Ph.
