Show Page Four THE WEBER HERALD September 26, 1932 DELTA PHI GETS GOING Weber College Chapter of Delta Phi National Honorary Fraternity held their first meeting of the new season Thursday at noon. Lew Brown Vice-Pres. was elected to the office of President to succeed Milton Rawson who is not attending the institiution this year. Archie Richardson was elected President. LeGrand Horsley was retained as secretary of the fraternity. Many social functions for the coming year were discussed and it was voted unamimously to support all student body activities. A very cordial invitation is extended to all returned missionaries attending Weber College this year who are interested in joining this organization to see one of the officers who will be more than glad to give them any information possible as to their affiliating themselves with the Delta Phi. A meeting will be held in the near future at which all returned missionaries are urged to attend we want to get acquainted. We are all full of pep and Weber can look for big things from the DELTA PHI the coming year. W . Dr. Hurst Heads New Athletic Body Dr. Guy H. Hurst, Business Professor at Weber College, is the chairman of a new athletic committee established this year to assist Weber's athletes in their work. The other members of this excellent body are Lon Romney, Male Watson, Raymond Price and Wal-Jace Manning. These men are "brothers" of the athletes to whom they may confide their troubles and feel that confident advice will be received. A more sportsmanlike group could not have been chosen, and the idea is one hundred pec cent ideal. W Alumnus Awarded Harvard Scholarship Alvin "Mike" Steed, '30, departed Saturday for Cambridge, Mass., where he will enter Harvard University School of Forestry. Mike graduated from U. A. C. last spring with a batchelor's degree and was the recipient of a tutition scholarship in Forestry to Yale or Harvard. Mike chose the latter and will pursue his Master's Degree in thatinstitution. College Cafeteria Opens New Quarters Students Can Exchange Produce For Meals The college cafetria, under the direction of Mrs. Lydia Tanner, Home Economics instructor, opened new quarters in the College Inn building last Monday. The same good food that has always been the byword of Mrs. Tanner's kitchen is being offered to students and teachers of Weber and Central Junior and the new location makes the whole menu more tasty .... Mrs. Tanner announces that any students who want to bring produce in return for meals are welcome to do so. W Ex Weher Stars Shine For "Utes" Elton "Red" Knapp, whose name will go down in Wildcat history as one of the greatest footballl ends and basketball centers ever to have donned the Purple and White, accompanied the Utah University foot ball team to Los Angeles for the game Saturday with Southern California. You'll hear more of "Red" as the season progresses. Augy Ahlf, co-captain of the 1931 Weber eleven and Don "Bonomo" Chambers another ex-football and basketball sensation of two years ago are also enrolled at the "U". Dou and Augy will see Freshman grid service this year, while Don is also out to cop a position on the cage team. W Clyde Hunter To Fulfill Mission Clyde Hunter, member of last vear's basketball squad, will leave October 27th to fulfill an L. D. S. mission in France. Clyde's farewell party will be held October 14 in the eighth ward. W BUSINESS NEWS The business department, under the direction of Dr. Hurst, and Miss Lucy Denning, has shown constant growth, more especially noticable this year. This department offers complete courses in Typing, Accounting, Shorthand, and office training. Registration fees have been reduced, and are now offered as cheaply as any of the other courses. Students enrolled in other courses will be given the privilege of enrolling for typing classes for a small laboratory fee of $2.00 per quarter. The office training class is soliciting all typing and other office work, both from students and the business concerns of the city. New Dormitory Purchased By School The large brick home at 2332 Jefferson Avenue, known as Shuff's Inn, has been purchased by the school board and is being prepared for a Girl's dormitory. This excellent bit of property was secured at a bargain and will make a splendid addition to Weber's fast growing properties. W Girls Debaters Scholarship Winners Misses Jcannette Manning and Jetta Barker, prominent Weber students of the class of '32 and especially outstanding in debating, are now in California continuing their studies and, we dare say. their high scholastic attainments. Jcannette earned a debating scholarship to the College of the Pacific at San Diego, and Jetta was equally deseving' of an English scholarship to the University of California at Los Angeles. Both scholarships carry free tuition. W Students, if you are disturbed during the 1 to 2 hour each day by strains of the "Twelfth Street Rag" or any number of popular molodies escaping from the keys of the school pianos, think nothing of it.. It is probably Frank Rounds that famous and well-known man about town whom will soon learn to associate with anything that looks, sounds, or appears to be a piano. Request numbers will be courteously attempted if you will file them with Mr. Rounds's booking agent, "Ron" Bramwell. Hey, Roundsey, play "Strange Interlude" tomorrow, will you ? W PIANO AND ORGAN CLASSES Mr. Anderson offers courses in piano and organ. These consist of one hr. practice a day, and one hr. of private instruction every week. Credits of one hr per quarter will be given for one hr. practice a day, while practice of two hrs. a day will entitle a student to two hrs credit a quarter. This instruction will cost the student $18 a quarter for piano instructions, and $25 a quarter for organ. Mr. Anderson also offers classes in String Ensemble. Private lessons can also be arranged. OUR BAND PEPS UP MONTANA GAME Roland '"Pop" Parry and his colorful Weber College band furnished the musical entertainment at the TJ. Y. U.-Montana State football game at the stadium last Friday night. Thirty-five hundred witnesses got an earful or what "Pop" and his boys are going to tlo for the old Wildcat eleven this fall. The band will be on the program again Oct. 8th, when Weber and the Ute Frosh play preliminary contest to the Utah -Nevada intersectional clash. : w Keith Wangsgard Now School Teacher Kieth Wangsgard, former Weber College football center and- more recently jan all-conference center and guard on the B. Y. U. team is now serving in the role of instructor at the South Washington Junior High School. Kieth is also helping Coaches Ernie Simkins and Dixon Kapple with the linemen of the Ogden High School's new gridiron edition. W Malad Fellows Pledge Support The I Kcp Upsolong fellows from Malad who came down to Weber have moved into their Bachelor apartments on the campus, and are beginning to keep house. With the advice of Mrs. Tanner the newcomers are making plans for the winter, trying to avoid indigestion. If the boys make a succes the first quarter, they may offer to help Mrs. Tanner with any overcrowded classes next quarter. The boys are happy because their house secretary Earl J. Thomas has been elected Vice-President of the Freshmen class. All the boys pledge their support to Weber. W Have you noticed Walton Foulg-er's beard, folks? W The "Man From The South", Tad Sorenson, is in school again after having spent the summer as a member of the Salina baseball nine. See Sorenson before making any forecasts on the World Series.
