IV THURSDAY, APRIL 15 EDITORIAL THOSE STATE CONTESTS This year the University of Utah has offered medals to encourage forensic contests. They have attempted to create a greater interest in debating, reading, and extemporaneous speaking than has heretofore been had by giving awards to the winners. At Weber debating this year has come to its own, but a lack of interest is prevalent in the other two contests. It is not our purpose to crit COLLEGE PLAY DECIDED HIT UPPERCLASS THESPIANS PRODUCE COMEDY DRAMA THAT MEETS EXPECTATION OF THE AUDIENCE "SAFETY FIRST" After several weeks of hard, undaunted work, the College Class made their initial appearance before the footlights. They presented the three act comedy farce, "Safety First," in a very commendable way. Miss Minnie Moore Brown directed the play. It is very likely that the play will be given by the College Class annually hereafter, and that a larger, better polished play will be the result of future attempts with the growth of the College Class. "Saftey First" is one of the most successful plays ever written for amateurs. The theme of the story is: Follow the model, "Safety First" and when married, remain home with your little wife, keeping her company and keeping yourself out of trouble. Walter Stevenson, as Jack Mont gomery, a young husband, and Olin Ririe, as Jerry Arnold, a young lover, characterized their parts very pleas ingly. Ira "almost napped" Terry, who was the goat for the character of Mr. McNutt, a defective detective. Abou Ben Moch, a Turk from Turkey; Zuleika, a tender Turkish maiden and her lover, Elmer Flannel, were characterized respectively by Arthur Hutchins, Emily C. Silvel and Le Roy Blaylock. The other characters of the play were as fol lows: Mabel Montgomery, Jack's wife, Zuleika J. Simmons, Virginia Bridger, her young sister, Norma L. Hussey, Miss Barrington Bridger, their mama, Inelma U. Stephens, ana Mary Ann O'Finnerty, an Irish cook lady, Mary Ernstrom. We have students who possess unlimited talent in dramatic reading and public speaking if they were only given the opportunity for expresing their ability. Weber should be able to win both of these contests from Ogden High School if sufficient preparation is made for the event. Our motto is "Be Prepared." TRYOUTS HELD FOR CONTEST ANNUAL ORATORICAL TRYOUTS REVEALS AN AWAKENED INTEREST IN PUBLIC SPEAKING Instead of a slump in the interest in the Oratorical Contests, because of our recent defied at the hands of the High School, Weber's students came forth with a determination to win in the Rich Contest. All previous records in the history of the Institution were smashed, as per number of students contesting for honors as representatives of the school. It has been a common tryout, in past history, when six or seven students have contested for honors, but sixteen strong was the squad of orators who raved all day Tuesday. March 6, 1920. Because of the long, strenuous hours and the many variety of orations it was almost impossible for the judges to choose the three superior orations. Therefore the best five were chosen to contest for honors on the following day. The tryouts in Devotional the following day proved to be one of the most educational programs of the school year. Ruth Scowcroft, speaking in "The Need Today of a Strong American Patriotism;" was unanimously awarded first place. Clar ence Brown, on "The New American Thrift," and Delbert Wright, on "Young America, the Hope of the World," tied for second honors. "The Crisis in Education," and "Reconstruction Problems," were the other subjects discussed by Robert Wilkinson and K. George Farley. s , ing the school year 1915-16, passed away Friday morning, April 9th, at Boston, Mass. Miss Scoville was a very instrumental student in all the activities and was loved by all. After graduating from Weber-she spent two years at the University of Chicago. She has always been an active member in church activities and for the past year and a half has been serving as a missionary in the Eastern States. She was released from, that branch of work last month. The students of Weber sincerely regret her sad death, and take this opportunity of extending their sympathy to all those by whom she was so dearly loved.
