To use the analogy of the cloud, "the class showed its silver lining." It is to be hoped that the lining is not ' nickel plated." The contest was the best of the series, so far. All the speakers had the subject well in hand, all spoke directly upon the topic, and all had good delivery. It was the unanimous decision of the judges that it was an improvement over all other contests. In fact, the competition was so keen that the Seniors and Sophs tied for first place. The general question discussed was "The Submarines and the War." The sub-topics together with the names of the speakers in their order of excellence as announced by the judges, Dr. J. C. Lind, Prof. Kimball Young, r.nd Win, M. McKay follows. The first two, however, were tied. The Fate of the Deutschland Golden Bingham. The Submarine as a Merchant Ship Andrew Kasius. Can Germany Starve England? Wallace Walker. Means of Defeating the German Submarine Cora Mortenson. As the contests now stand the Seniors lead with 7 1-2 points; the Freshmen come next with 6 points; the Juniors are third with 5 points, and the Sophs , gaining with 4 1-2 points. FRIDAY, A 3fattt The majority of you students will experience a very unusual Christmas this year a war time Christmas. The joyous, carefrea days of belief in Santa Claus have gone. One by one have the serious purposes of Yule-tide been thrust upon us until this year we are face to face with 'he real meaning of true giving and self-sacrifice. Our fathers, brothers, ind loved ones have forfeited the comforts and safety of home, to give their time, effort and lives, if necessary to protect us. It behooves us who remain behind, "THINKERS" GLUd LATEST "FRAT" MEETINGS TO BE HELD IN BOILER ROOM A "Thinkers" club is to be organized immediately. As all entrances to the building are locked at 5 p. m. .aid as evenings bring forth good thinking, Gus Visser has given the club permission to hold its meetings fin the Boiler Room. At that it is better than an "office" because the members will not freeze out. Knockers, especially carpenters, are wanted to ' form the membership of this organization. The idea of originating this club was uncovered in the mind of "Prof." Kasius." It is to be the foundation for this year's debating work. The reason for calling it a "thinker's" frat is that members are wanted who can think out problems for themselves who do not take any statement as absolute "truth" or justified "law." Coach Kasius is preparing a list of names of those he desires to join the club. They are then to be invited to enlist. Only those are wanted who can get down to real serious thinking from independent opinions; and yet at the same time bebroad-minded enough to enjoy a good time and be sociable. Let us hope the ciub is organized at once, so we shall think for ourselves. EFFICIENCY TO BE REWARDED (Continued from page 1.) ing." Yet scholarship we cannot deny is a powerful force for efficiency and an efficient student must be scholarly. Neither will the medal be given for participation in student body activities. These alone develop power and personality, but they do not give one a wealth of information and material. Therefore student activities do not measure complete efficiency. They are however, the writer believes, just as important as studies. Real leaders do not spring up because they have a great deal of "book-learning;" they take cognizance, in their school days, of the school activities. Then, too, character should be considered when it comes to efficiency. An all-around efficient student must have character. The efficiency medal will ie given to the student who scores the highest number of points scholarship, student activities and character be TOMATOES the best. Let us offer a payer frcm our heart, upon this Christmas day that protection, comfort, and encouragement may be the happy lot of our boys; and that before the anniversary of the birth of Christ shall roll around again, the earth shall have witnessed the introduction of the enternal reign of "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men." JUNIOR CLASS STEPS OUT ON WAS PATH The editor desires to correct that general impression that his life is one continual round of pleasure, and he seems to possess a better knowledge of this fact since the appearance of the last issue of the Herald. It became almost necessary for him to call upon the police department to furnish a body guard to protect him from a number Qf irate students, especially Juniors. The chief cause of their wrath was an article headed "Taylor Ward Entertains Juniors." The editor feels that the anger is unwarranted and maintains that the article contained the "whole truth and nothing but the truth" and has witnesses to substantiate his argument. However, he does admit that the short note attached to the article was misleading in its statement. Miss Peterson, the Junior reporter, did submit a" report in he form of the ' program of vaudeville, which the class presented at Taylor, but in no way elaborated upon to form a finished write-up for publication. The editor was so busy that he readily accepted the article contributed and published it as a report of the affair. The incident only tends to show that class reports should be ready on time and in proper shape for publication.ing taken into consideration. Each of these three prime requisites to efficiency are to be rated equal when it comes to scoring for the prize. The faculty committee that will decide upon the most efficient student has not been appointed yet; but even if it does not exist until the last of the year the student who receives the medal must do good work even at present. Every high school student is eligible, and it has not yet been decided whether college students are disqualified because of their greater experience. The year's record of each student is to be considered and then the award made. If you are interested it will pay you to take part in classes, activities and not ? The editor of last year's Acorn has not been approached on the subject yet this year, but he approved of the plan last year. Last year's president of the Student Body, however, assured the Herald that this medal will bt given. A Complete Line of Toys and Holiday Goods atson-Fiygare Hdw. Co.
