Show PACE FOUR THE WEBER HERALD SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1923 is The New Weber College The old Weber College the Weber Normal College, with its handful of college students and its great majority of high school members, is gone. It served its purpose in the transition period from high school to junior college, and has become a thing of the past. Its handicaps, its tininess, its limitations, are gone with it. In its place, from the seed it sowed, has come the new Weber, whole-heartedly a college, with a code of college ideals and standards already being developed. The several years previous to last saw the college class, as it was called, depending entirely upon the high school for support. It seemed more like a post-graduate department than a college. Last year it was raised to the same degree of importance enjoyed by that lower branch of education. It thrived so well on its new independence that now it has been trusted to carry on the name and standards of Weber alone. This is the new Weber College. That the new school, the college, will carry out the plans and hopes of those who founded the old school is quite assured. It will do more it will reach out to several times the number of people that were influenced by its predecessor, and offer them a still greater gift of education. Because we have now pledged ourselves to build a successful college for Ogden, we hope, and have faith in our hope, that we shall be aided to this end by all advocates of education, and especially by all friends of Weber. .- --.T .- The Time to Repair Your Shoes Is When School Starts Washington Slioe Repair Co. Taylor has been appointed principal of the Weber Theological seminary, it was announced today. For the past two years Mr. Taylor has been an instructor in the Weber college. He was graduated by the University of Utah, with A. B. degree, in 1915. The seminary will be the first of its kind in Ogden. However, many cities in the various states of the union have similar institutions, the announcement says. The four stake presidencies in Weber county constitute the seminary board. The executive committee of the board consists of the following members: George E. Browning, chairman; Samuel G. Dye, secretary ; Thomas M. Irvine, Joseph Ririe and B. H. Goddard. The seminary will be conducted in several rooms of the Weber college building, and the students to be admitted are those of the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. It is possible that certain ninth grade students may be enrolled. The courses to be offered are: Old Testament in the tenth grade, New Testament in the eleventh, and church history and doctrine in the twelfth. For this work the state will grant one unit of credit. The purpose of the seminary is to give high school students a working knowledge of the life and gospel of Jesus Christ and to inspire them to live a fuller and better life, says the announcement. The seminary will open for registration September 6, 7 and 8. This naturally is a great disappointment to everyone, but still we believe its completion by the first of next year is assured. When it is finished we will be proud of it, for it will be one of he most modern and beautiful buildings of its kind in the country. Furthermore, it is reported by President Tracy that the "gymn" floor will be ready for basket ball at the opening of the season, although the rest of the building may not be quite completed. The showers, pool, and floor are all that are necessary for basket ball, and these will be ready by the first part of December. Pete Couch, star football shark, and president of last year's graduating class, has been spending the summer pumping a two wheeled automobile. He ought to be able to do some fast work for the football team. "Wildcat" Morris and "Heinie" Cortez, two of the pillars of the football team two years ago, are expected to return to Weber this fall. Football stock goes up ten points. With the new equipment which is now being installed to meet college demands no one should hesitate to come here on account of the cry that our equipment is poor. The two rooms which served last year as library and study hall have been made into one large library room which is equipped with shelves for the books, and chairs and tables for the use of the students. Approximately two thousand new volumes of regular college library books have been added to those had previously. This addition makes our library come up to standard. More books will be purchased in the near future. The science department has also been enlarged and brought up to the college standard. The school has one room for a geological laboratory, one for a physics laboratory and a lecture room, all with new and up-to-date fixtures and equipment. Miss Maujjhaii Not to Return Weber has lost one of her foremost faculty members, but the reason for the calamity is shrouded in deep mystery. Everyone confidently expected Miss Lavinia Maughan, head of the department of English, to return to school this year, but at the last moment it was definitely found out that she would not come. According to tradition, when a lady faculty member leaves Weber it is for one of two reasons : either she is going on a mission, or she is expecting to get married. As we have heard no rumors of either one of these, we are in hopes that she will come back to us next year, at the latest. Unmatriculatetl Students There were many students of Weber High School who could not graduate last year, but who only need one or two units in order to do so. For these persons special courses in high school work have been arranged which will enable them to meet the college demand for sixteen units of high school credit. High school courses in English, mathematics, and theology will be given during the fall quarter. At the beginning of the winter quarter the ones taking these courses will have completed them, and will be entered as regular college students. The plan is to only give them one or two subjects to master, and to concentrate a year's work into twelve weeks. In this way they can save almost a whole year in getting their college education.EVERYTHING IS FIRST CLASS at the Wistaria Reliable Equipment Is as essential in the HOME as in the laboratory or class room liny a Royal Charter Oak Range Makes Good Raking Better Fletcher Hardware Co. 2279 Washington Ave. Phone 1161 The Student Body Activities Weber this year will participate in all forms of activity in which college students are interested. Athletics, dramatics, amusements, publications and debating are a few of those to be featured. Weber is a member of the Church Junior College league. This alone insures an interesting athletic program.Inter-class and inter-collegiate contests in football, basketball, and track will be held. With the completion of the gymn several others will be added to the program. Triangular debating arrangements have been made whereby Weber will debate the Brigham Young College at Logan and the Ricks College, at Rexburg, Idaho. The winner of this triangle will meet the winner of the Southern Triangle for the church junior college championship. Inter-school public speaking contests will also be held. Prizes will be awarded the winners. The James L. Barker extemporaneous speaking contest will be transferred into the college. The class attaining the highest number of credits will receive the James L. Barker cup. To the student winning first place a cash prize of ten dollars is awarded. The John S. Lewis extemporaneous speaking contest will also be held. The J. S. Lewis medal is awarded the winner by the Lewis Jewelry Company of Ogden. The Heber J. Grant oratorical contest will be continued in the church colleges. President Grant presents an autographed book to the successful contestant in this affair.Mrs. Flora Eccles Douglas awards annually three prizes for literary excellence in different forms of written composition. Twenty dollars is given to the student writing the best poem; fifteen dollars is given to the one producing the best short story; and another fifteen dollars is offered for the best essay. The annual College play will be presented at the Or-pheum Theater. The cast is selected by means of competitive tryouts for the various parts. The music department will prepare an opera for presentation, as it has done in the past. Weber will also continue to observe her school traditions, chief among them being Founders' Day. This day, January seventh, is celebrated by a march of the entire school, with alumni members, and board of education, to all the former homes of Weber. The students look forward to this day with much interest. The annual hike to Mount Ogden, which was instituted last year, will be held sometime in September. The date has not yet been definitely decided upon. The entire student body will make the trip, and will raise the American flag from the pole placed there last year by the hikers. Fitting services will be observed on the peak. This event promises to be one of the high lights in the whole school year. Weber's student activities will cover every field of endeavor and those desiring to engage in them will have a great many from which to choose.
